Adjustable 5th Wheel Hitch to prevent bottoming out?
Just looking to move from a TT to a 5th wheel. My biggest concern is that my driveway had a pretty good hill to it. With my other trailers I just clear the driveway without bottoming out.
My concern on a 5th wheel would be the camper crushing my tailgate etc.
I thought I had heard of a hitch that could be adjusted on the fly?
Anyone know anything out there?

Why not put a 5th wheel air tailgate on?.......If you have the recommended 6" bed rail clearance, would have to be a really steep angle cresting the top hump...

Have never heard of on-the-fly adjustable hitches. Perhaps you're referring to an auto-slider, but that won't solve your problem.

Agree with ralphie. If the hill allows you to almost bottom out as it sounds like it goes up, I'm not sure the tailgate would be the concern but the front truck bedsides?
Raising up the height adjustability of the hitch would be the answer IMO.

I currently have 6in of bed rail clearance and am a bit nose high. Recently, I bottomed the rear of the trailer going uphill to a tire shop.
My Andersen hitch is easy to adjust hitch height on the fly so I am considering adjusting pinbox height so that I have room to move the hitch ball up or down as needed for a temporary situation like going up a short hill entry point. Not the easiest solution but it is a solution.

I thought of that, but that wont change anything as far as the bed rails themselves. That's what I'm more worried about, the tailgate would be an easy removal.

yeah I thought of that too. Especially with my business trailers in the yard etc I simply will not have the room to drive it in and turn it around.

I'll look into that. If I can't get it into the driveway I'd have to pay to store it at some place, but obviously that's a PITA.

I think the bedsides just behind the cab are where you will hit, not the tailgate. Tailgate will have even more clearance.

If you are nose high then I would lower the hitch height
I added a set of dolly wheels on the 5 wheel tail to keep from dragging

He has 6" clearance now. If he lowers hitch he won't have the clearance he needs.

IF it is a sharp angle change between the street and driveway, what about a couple ramps (one for each set of wheels) to make the transition more gentle ? Wouldn't take but a couple minutes to set up and take down, no need to travel with them, keep them at home. Depending on your instance, you could probably get away with 2x wood planks, as in 2x10, 2x12, etc. Double them if needed. If 5 or more feet support, (just guessing, I'm no engineer) you can put a block underneath.... Easy Peasy, and fairly cheap... Just need to go slow and make sure they are aligned properly...
