Another confusing weight limit question
I have read all of the old posts but this has got me confused.
Here is what Chevrolet has to say about my 2013 Silverado 3500 HD dually:
Vehicle weight limits
Curb Weight 7457
Max Payload 4153
GVWR 11600
Max Conventional Trailering, 3.73 rear axle 13000
Max 5th Wheel Trailering, 3.73 axels 16,800
GCWR, 3.73 rear axel 24,500
Frot Gross Axle Weigth Rating 5,600
Rear Gross Axle Weight Rating 7,050
(sorry for formatting Excel pasting).
What is the difference between the Max 5th Wheel trailing at 16,800 and the GCWR? If I add the curb weight and the max 5th wheel I get 24,257 not 24,500.
I always thought I could tow more than 16,800. I was incorrect, right?

So long as the GCWR, GVWR and GAWRs are not exceeded. Chevy's calculation assumes a base truck with only a 150 lb driver. The weight of driver, passengers, options, cargo, the 5th wheel hitch, etc. above that 150 lbs must be deducted from the fictitious "maximum trailer tow rating".

Basically you need to load up the truck like for a trip, full fuel and get the front and rear axle weights and the total weight. Add 200# if you do not have a 5er hitch yet.
Your GVWR is 11600# and the GCWR is 24,500#. Once you have the truck load and ready for the road, you actual curb weight will probably be closer to 9000#. The truck in my signature is just shy of 9000#. So lets assume 9000# for your truck as a starting point.
24500# - 9000# = 15,500# loaded trailer weight.
For the pin weight assuming the trailer weighs 15,500#, use 20% and you get 3100#.
11500# - 9000# = 2500# available for pin weight.
So a 15,500# trailer will put you over your GVWR (3100# for the trailer and your limit is 2500#.
So going at it in reverse with a max 2500# pin weight, (2500 / 0.2) you are limited to a max trailer weight of 12500#.
Are you sure your GVWR is only 11500#. My 2012 Ford F350 DRW is 13,300# GVWR and the GCWR is 30,000#. So I can carry 1800# more pin weight than you are rated for.

I didn't select LTZ and DRW.
Here are the numbers. Can you help again with max trailer weight. Oh, and how do you figure out front axel weight? Drive 1/2 of the car on the scale?
Curb Weight=7782
Max Payload=5273
GVWR=13,000
Max conventional trailer towing=18,000 (3.73 gear)
Max 5th wheel trailering= 22,600
GCWR, 3.73 axel = 30,500
I thought I could tow more. What is the maximum trailer weight I can effectively utilized. I added the weight of all the things I added (like bigger tanks (and the weight of the extra fuel)) and that weight is 2,619 lbs. So, it would be my weight (210), wife (not dare saying) and anything else we put into the truck.
Thanks for your hlep and pointing out my problem

Nope. you don't have to hold half the car up to weigh just the front ,
cat scales have 3 independent scales that the front axle, rear axle, and trailer set on...
Everything you want to know about cat scales
CAT Scale
I think that should be part of the test for licensing as how many of us were overweight when we first started ?!?! I know I was !

YES, 16800 is the max 5th wheel weight your truck is rated to tow.

Yes you were incorrect.
As in another post , the difference is the drivers weight allowance of 150 lbs. then a rounded up to 24,500.
A realistic 5th wheel trailer weight ( GVW ) would be 15,000, that would leave you with an 1,800 lb. load cushion, for stuff in the truck. Remember it is possible to be under GCVW and be over on the truck RAWR.
Sorry I didn't read post #6

OK if you have already added 2,619lbs to the truck , you need to deduct that weight and any other truck cargo from the 5th wheel weight.
JMHO. your 5th GVW should be 18,500 lbs or less.
Yes driving the front wheels only onto the scale will give you you front weight, all truck wheels on truck weight; truck weight - front weight = rear axle weight.
You also need to watch the trailer pin weight because your added tanks and fuel are mostly over the rear axle, you need to weigh the truck loaded , get the rear weight and the difference between that and the RAWR of your truck would be your MAX pin weight.

I'm sure the GVWR of a GM dually has increased substantially since 2002, and my 02 GM dually has a GVWR of 11,000#. You might want to re-check your owners manual. Then again, in 02, GM only offered the 4:10 ratio differential.

Shouldn't I add the 2,619 to truck payload leaving less that I can put into the truck and trailer (due to transfer of 15% pin weight?

No.you add the 2,619 to the curb weight and subtract it from the payload. your max 5th wheel trailer weight, is based on your truck at it's curb weight, so all weight you put in the truck is part of the payload #
payload = 5273lbs max load the truck can carry.
less tanks & fuel 2619
avalible payload 2654lbs is your allowable weigh of your pin and the rest of your truck cargo.
Another way of looking at it is your curb weight empty was 7782lbs
you have incresed the curb weight by adding tanks and fuel 2619
so now your actual curb weight is 10401lbs
Take the GCVW of 30,500
less the real truck lbs 10,401
equals 20,099 all thats left for addional cargo in the truck and the weight of the trailer.
So if you get a 18,000lbs 5th with 15% or 2,700lbs on the pin you will be overloaded.
Just a thought; 2619 for tanks and fuel ... how many extra gallons are you carrying anyway?
