Hi All
Was wondering how to tell if the fluid in my 6 [COLOR=#0072BC ! important][COLOR=#0072BC ! important]volt[/COLOR][/COLOR] batteries is "up to par" Not sure where I should see the the level up to ?? I can see it is a bit over the "fins" or whatever they are

Hi Jo,

Batteries should be up to the inner and lower part of the neck of filler hole.
This is the area that the liquid come up to on the inside bottom of the filler hole while filling with water.
Never allow the liquid to go below the top of your plates or the battery will short out and become useless.

Also, use distilled water only.

Do not guess at the water level. Use a flash light and see that it is the proper level.

I will second the suggestion to use only DISTILLED WATER, though that is NOT what is in the battery (That is dilute sulfuric acid) it is the water part that gets "lost" and thus you replace only Distilled water.. NOT tap but DISTILLED.

As to the level.. I like just below the bottom of the tube... There are assorted reasons for this.. but 1/8 inch is good,, Just slightly below the bottom of the tube.. However if you find you put it up to the bottom.. DO NOT REMOVE ANY.

When you look inside the filler opening, down at the bottom you will see a notch from the bottom that is about 1/4" long. That is a notch to allow any gassing to escape, liquid level should be between the bottom of the notch/filler tube after adding water. Westinghouse Electric Corporation used de-ionized water in their fork truck batteries, not distilled.

you can get cheap hydrometer at advance or other parts places and check specific gravity of the fluid. Each cell is different and can tell if you have a bad one Jack
