Best Battery Format?

ive been doing alot of research and cant seem to find a answer to my question....Space isn't as much of a issue, nor is weight(to some extent). im trying to see what the best batteries to get givin g a AH rating. looking to be in the 800-1000AH range, as we do alot of dry camping, lights/stereo, inverter use. the trailer has a genset and freedom 458, 100 amp inverter/charger.

i currently have 4 rolls S530's (L16's) 400AH@20 amps. Would it be most cost effective to stay in this format or go to a GC2?

Well, the most cost effective is the standard GC2 6 volts. A pair at Costco and Sams is about $85 plus core charge for 100 amp hours. About $1000 for the storage capacity you are looking for and should last 5 to 7 years or so. The downside is that many batteries will weigh roughly 600 pounds.

That S530 battery is a very nice set. I dont think you will beat the 530amp hrs easily. Most common GC batteries are in the 125 to 225 amp hr rating.

Are they just old and need replacing? Or are they insufficient for your needs.

While this article is focused on home-based off-grid systems showing 12V, 24V, and 48V bank comparisons there is still a lot of information for you to digest: What are the Best Batteries for Solar Newbies?

I got them used 3 years ago, and they were used in a off grid system, with marginal maintenance, They are just showing their age, I might try restoring them and see how that goes. The L16 is a really easy size to work with

If you are wired for 12V that is actually about 850 AH@20A. That is HUGE !

To get that much storage out of GC2s will take EIGHT batteries ! I don't know what those L16s cost, but 8 GC2 batteries will cost $700-$800.

With such a large battery bank how do recharge it back to 100% ?????

Thatís the main reason I like the l16, itís essentially 2 GC2ís stacker on top of each other

Iím using a freedom 458, 100 amp 3stage charger/inverter, I donít have solar yet, cost wise the L16 is a little more for given AH. Though when I got these 4 years ago I payed $75 each and they tested 80% with a hydrometer

WOW!!! A Trojan L16 battery has 435 AH. I'd be one very happy boondocker with just 2 of those bad boys.

My understanding is - two 6v 220 A/hr batteries wired in series gives you 12v 220 A/hr. So two 6v at 425 A/hr would equal 425 A/hr, not 850.

Looks like current model is S550 at a cost of $300 - $400, about 50 -100% more costly than the GC2 at Costco. Takes up less square footage but is much taller than equivalent number of GC2s.

In general I would say -
less cabling is better
less battery maintenance is better
higher cost is not better

I have 4 currently, thatís also my thoughts...how much is storage space worth?

They have a 7 year warranty. The last several are pro-rated. You might want to contact the manufacturer and see if you can get some love from them.

Its worth a shot.
