Black tank dump valve question from newbie!

Hi everyone!

We recently purchased a 2011 Keystone Laredo 266RL fifth wheel and the dump valve handles are VERY hard to pull so I plan to replace both the black and gray tank dump valves BUT when I went to purchase the new ones I saw there were several different sizes! Can anyone tell me what size they are so I can have them ready when I remove the underbelly covering?

Thanks for the help

First thing to try is to lubricate the shafts of the dump valves with silicone spray lube.

If they are like mine, the black is a 3" and the gray 1.5".

Thanks.... I tried luring the handles with a lube but it didn't help so my next step is to replace!

I use a tank chemical with palm oil in it, have never needed to replace a valve in all the years I've been RV'ing.

Black is always 3 inch and gray is always 1.5 inch. Chances are the cable is not the problem but the valve itself is clogged with debris. Stuff does stick to the blade and it can also build up inside the cavity that the blade opens into. If you disassemble the valve, clean it, lube it and reassemble it then it will work better. Then in the future, flush the tanks very well, add dish soap as a lubricant. If you don't want to tackle the messy job, then use a mixture of mineral oil and water. 1/2 gal oil and 2 gal water, with the valve closed let it sit for a few hrs then dump it into a bucket and repeat several times. Then repeat with the black valve.

I agree w/ Tom, lube the silver slide shaft. I use CRC Heavy Duty Silicone from Walmart. Valves still work well and have not been replace in years. I don't use chemicals in either tank, but do drain the excess oil from Sardines into both tanks.

Thanks for all the useful info! As I said I did try lubing the "shaft" and I flushed the tank several times but that didn't help either. When I finally get them replaced I will definitely keep them lubricated so I don't have this problem again!

I know this goes without saying, but make sure the tanks are empty before proceeding......

I think the problem was that the original owner who had not used the unit in two years let it sit with empty tanks and everything kind of dried and hardened up in there!

I agree that there may be gunk in the slot and such. You might get a slide valve that attaches the bayonet At the outlet. This would allow you to open the valve a let the pipes sit with water and a lub/softener. May free up the valves and is low effort and cost to try.

I keep one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Not only to backflush but to have in the event of a valve/cable failure.
