Broken Axles

My sister has a 5th wheel toy hauler from Heartland, and they have had to fix a broken axle on numerous occasions. Seems like each time they take it anywhere, it ends up with an axle repair job. I think they are on their 3rd or 4th repair at this point. Most recently, drove it from CO to VA, no toys, and once here found out the back axle was broken again. Repaired here, drove back to CO, and it's broke again. Anyone else having this issue with the rear axle?

What do you mean by 'broken axle'?

Axle tube flatted vs having upward bend?
Spindle issue?
Hub assembly separating from axle tube?
ETC?????

Has your Sister EVER taking the rig across set of scales....loaded for trip...and got weighed?

I find it interesting that the =rear= axle is having issues when the garage is =empty=. I wonder if the other breaks have also been on the rear. That, to me, would suggest an alignment issue. I agree, weighing it both empty and loaded, would be an excellent place to start. If this has been happening under warranty, I'd think Heartland would want to know WTH's happening, as well as the axle maker.

Is this a double or triple axle?

Need more info - this is very uncommon. Bent, yes, spindle failure from not greased bearings, yes. Just broken, no.

Driving habits can be a cause. Do they hit every curb they see? Try to force it in a tight spot putting alot of side strain on the hubs? Is it setup very nose high? And as said, what exactly is broken. I've had lots of trailers and never once has an axle just broke.

Equalized leaf spring, or torsion bar axles? And how many? And what are they rated for vs how much axle load is there in reality?

Don't you love it someone starts a thread with missing info that is needed for correct answers, and doesn't come back.

If he ever comes back...

I think you got what is commonly referred to as "Faux-axles".... these are very common on dealer lots and are just there to look good while you are shopping for a unit without actually moving it. These were never designed to go on actually roads. Are you sure your sister didn't intentionally purchase a "stationary" 5th wheel that was never supposed to be moved? Many have made the mistake of not asking the salesman ..." Is this trailer, 5th wheel or RV actually movable?"

Your best course of action is to buy "road-use" axle's from a trusted company like Walmart... they install too! They can also sell you some top tier Chinese tires that will really complete this new superior and reliable package. Really though... like many say on this site... "Buy used..." get used tires that are broken in to take some of the stress and cost off of you.
