Is there a book or somewhere one can go to learn to repair day/night shades? It seems ours are breaking one right after the other.

Yes there is! Welcome to irv2.com and our discussion forum.
Here are two websites that explain in detail how to repair/replace the string:

fixmyblinds.com
String may be purchased locally by phoning window shade entries in your yellow pages.

It isn't difficult to repair your own. The string broke in mine so I took a piece to the Window & Blind store and bought 25 feet of the correct size string. There is a top bar, a middle bar and a bottom bar. Take the covers off and observe how the string is fed. I used a carpet needle to thread the string thru the shade.

Try it. If I can do it so can you.
