I plan to re-seal most or all of the joints on my 5'er.
On my particular unit (like most) , the seams are covered by putty tape and then screw channel with the vinyl insert. In some places it appears that the putty has been squeezed out.
What should I use as a replacement sealant gasket after I pull off the channel? Putty or butyl tape?

Thanks for the reply. I have some Eternabond tape which I plan to use on the end cap seams (on the roof) and around all of the other roof structures.
On the sidewall, approx. 3" below the roof line, I have a strip of channel/gutter running the length of the coach that evidently covers the joint between the roof membrane and the gel-coat siding. I wish to replace the sealant/gasket under this channel.

First off, your unit is not that old to need to have the putty all pulled off. At least I don't think so. Most people where the sealant is squeezed out, simply use a plastic scraper, or I use a single edged razor blade and very carefully score a line at the joint and then slip the blade under the putty you want to remove and it will slide off in a nice clean line. Follow this with some wax and you should be good to go.

I pulled back a short section of the j-gutter and it looks OK. It had some sort of black very sticky adhesive stuff behind it. Not sure exactly what it is. I will simply clean the gutter channel and run a new bead of sealant over the top of it.
I did remove the channel mold that begins at the rear end of the gutter and travels down along the end cap seam. It appears that there was some water infiltration on the top section of that piece. I will re-putty that section.

I have a '98 American Star where I found I had some water damage, that involved pulling the sealing strips/rain gutters off the sides of the roof. My roof was one of the Britech rubber roofs, and I was advised to use the butyl putty. I was told the regular putty will eventually soften the Britech roof.

Thanks for the reply. It is butyl tape behind the gutter because it backs up to the EDPM roof material. Evidently the "regular" putty tape has petroleum in it which will damage the roof. My American Star is sieve. Been re-sealing all of the seam joints.
