I really don't understand the 'Walmart Etiquette Police' that insist you shouldn't put slides out. Now if you put down a patio rug, awning, chairs, and grill I'd think that it would be overkill, but many RVs are hard to get around in and many cabinets or closets are difficult to access with the slides in. If you pick a spot where the slides won't interfere with traffic, why not put them out for the night?
I don't understand why you'd need to disconnect from the truck for the night. When connected is your trailer at an angle that prevents leveling? If so, you could use the excuse that your fridge needs the trailer level to operate. I just wouldn't disconnect if it's only to drive off in the truck or something like that.
In a truck stop or Walmart, why not use the LP furnace? Make sure no ducts need the slides out to operate. (doubtful) Unless you have a built-in generator you can't use a heat pump and it's only good down to 40º before it is too inefficient. Also, don't park in such a way the wind blows the exhaust back into the RV.
