My Champions put out 2800 each for 5600 watts! Love them... who would compare a contractor genny with an enclosed inverter? Not smart....

Yup... thought I'd try it.

Nope.

Ok... not the same generator... my 3400w champion dual fuel inverter is quiet.. only 2DB louder than a Honda 3k... Which costs 2x more. You bought a contractor generator expecting it to be as quiet as a true invertor.... bad comparison.

No... it was generally noisy, 'hybrid' generator with an open frame...
not just the exhaust.

Got it today. Put oil in it and started it up.
Wife came out of the house and inquired... 'What's that noise out here'?
She said... we can't run that out camping. I agreed.

I also had an older Predator 4kw generator for emergency home use.
Moved it out of the garage and ran the generators in series first one, then another.
Champion was much louder... and had an annoying 'twang' to it too.
Couldn't carry on a conversation close to it. IMHO: Bummer.
Older Predator was a lot better... but pretty heavy.

So I went to Harbor Freight and bought a 2kw Predator.
Oiled it up... and started it. Was stunned... amazingly quiet.
Went in the house and sat down by the wife...
I said 'Can you hear the generator running?" She said... 'nope'.

Less than 1/2 the price of a Honda.
Guess we will see how long it lasts.
If we are happy, we will buy another, with a 'parallel' kit to run the A/C.

Northern tool also sells one under the powerhorse brand. I have the 2000w model and love it! Run the crap out of it and never a single problem.

Yup... up to a point though, the generator we 'tested'
it against was open frame too! Lots quieter.
Whatever 'quiet' was provided by the inverter was drowned out by the engine.

The 'little' Predator has lots of sound deadening in it.
I was a bit amazed at that the plastic didn't get hot after running it.
Looks like somebody had put some 'design' time into it.

I'm hoping that the Chinese have 'figured' out generators.
I think they have it figured out, I have one of these close to 10 years and it got a work out at an off grid cabin.

It will run my domestic brisk air II 15k A.C. unit... hard starting bugger but with a hard start capacitor it's not a problem.

Price difference on them is roughly $150 a piece. The big question I have is will two 3100's power two AC's and the rest of my electronics - laptops, modems, TV, fridge, etc, or should I just get the bigger ones?

Please don't hijack and suggest a Honda or Yamaha, unless you're paying the extra $$$$. That decision has already been made.
Two things... First, I have a Champion 2000 Inverter which works great for "my" needs. Certainly not big enough for you, BUT, just want you to know that the Champion has been awesome for me...Starts first pull every time...RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX TOO!

Second, I would certainly go for "more power" in your situation...never heard anyone complain by having too much power...JMHO!!! Enjoy...
