Discovered a problem with my springs and shackles while checking u-bolts under the RV. Spring leaf's are shewed and not aligned causing the second one to rub into the shackle side. Same on both sides of the rear axle. Have to check tomorrow about a path forward. Looks like our plans to spend winter in AZ have just changed. Not Good.

There should be a band clamp on one end of each spring stack. Without them, the leaves can fan out. They are readily available and easy to install (and should have been there from the factory).

They’re also called “rebound clips”. Their main purpose is to keep the springs in the stack together when vertically flexing to prevent them from breaking, but they also prevent lateral fanning.

A shackle bracket is easy to replace, too. This shouldn’t cause you to miss a winter vacation.

Ez fix. Follow tdaves advice, get some rebound band clamps. Any decent spring or trailer supply house should be able to help you out. I probably wouldn't even worry about replacing the shackle...
Good catch. This is what preventative maintenance inspections are all about.

The banding strap is still in tact on one side but the springs have spread anyway. I tried to squeeze the bands back together with some clamps but wasn't successful. Replacing the shackles won't do any good until the bands are fixed or they will just rub again. Waiting to talk with reps tomorrow. Need to know if I can safely move it to a shop (75 miles) or if it has to be fixed where it sits. My concern is that the axle is bent or moved out of alignment. I'm told something caused the bands to move. Need to find root cause so it doesn't just repeat.

The ubolts were prob just put on with an impact wrench. They moved or shifted and the axle shifted causing the bamds to stretch etc. They need to be torqued to proper spec so they stretch. what needs to be done is the ubolts need to be replaced and torqued and steretched to spec.

That's what I was doing when I found the problem, I was checking the torque on the u-bolts and shackles. Didn't find anything loose. If the axle has shifted (moved) it will have to be re-aligned will it not? U-bolts show no sign of wear. They're new.

You are not going to be able to bring the fan together without first unloading the spring. I've seem this happen to a load of tandem axles with hard twists when backing. Once you unload it, I bet a ball peen hammer or small hand sledge will slide it back over.

Hard to see exactly, but looks like a pretty good gouge out of the spring hanger. You might want to get it welded up. I'd get a tape measure and a straight edge and check alignment. If ok then unload the spring, weld the gouge, and knock the springs back together.

A good trailer shop can remedy your problem fairly quickly.

After the leaf springs are brought back into position rather than repairing/welding the shackle I would replace them with a "wet bolt" kit. It will give you greaseable bolts and beefier shackles.

Good point. Honestly, surprised to see that a Vanleigh Beacon doesn't come from the factory with wet bolts!

Mine has the Equa-Flex system which has 5 zerk fittings on it. One at the top where the Equa-Flex mounts to the frame. One at each end of the front and rear springs and one on each side where the shackle links attach to the Equa-Flex. So where do these Wet-Bolts go?
