dual axle vs three axle maneuverability

What kind of difference is there in maneuverability of a two axle fifth wheel and a three axle toy hauler fifth wheel? I'm making a pretty big jump....from a 30' TT to a 41' triaxle TH!! I know there will be a difference in going from TT to a fifth wheel but for instance in cornering and backing into a camping site is there a major difference between the two and three axle units??

Thanks!

My last boat trailer was a triple. I never noticed any difference backing or turning. Pay attention to tires and bearings. Tires drag when making sharp corrections backing and put a load on the bearings.

Our 18,000 lb 5er had 3 axles as does our stacker. You will find there will be more drag when turning and therefore will have to add a little throttle. As mentioned there will be quite a bit of torque added to the axles when turning and you will see the tires deform and the axles twist up when turning sharply. Not to worry as the tires will age out before they wear out IMO. We upgraded the ST to LT tires at purchase and were happy with the results.

I've never had a triple axle anything, but if you have to maneuver such that the tires deform similar to a tandem, then you gotta do it, yes? I agree with Gordon, tires will age out first.

I agree with the others. It should not change the maneuverability but will add a little drag in the tight corners. Personally I would not make corners any tighter than I had to just to reduce tire deformation but like has been said you have to do that sometimes. Just do it slow.

Might consider Mor-Ryde X-Factor cross braces for the 3x axle.

Performance Crossmembers by MORryde - MORryde Products

Hope you have a big truck to pull 'er with. And consider disc brakes, if not equipped already.

Thinking about this a bit I would like to add the maneuverability will have to do with the distance from the pin to the center axle. If it is longer than the distance from the pin to between tandem axles you will have to make slightly wider turns with the triple axle.

You can probably manuver the fifth as good or better than the bumper pull TT. 3 or 2 axle won't be much difference however I would be more concerned on axle rating 6000 or 7000 pound. Check gvwr gawr and carrying capacity as some MFG like to go right to the limit. Also make sure you have enough truck to pull and stop the fifth. There are a lot of variables to look at when going to a triple axle 41 foot. Good luck and be safe.

I've had both and don't see any difference between them.

I have driven rigs for over 40 years. Lowboys with oversize, widest being 24 feet, longest being 100 feet, the load itself. The first thing I would start doing is to Plan Out My Routs too and from where I am going. Even where you fuel. This in itself will make you a much safer driver, and will take care of the rig at the same time.

Thanks for all the replies.....

The unit is rated at 15.5k empty and 20k fully loaded. The axles are rated at 7k each...for a total rating of 21k.....so I should be fine in that area. We certainly don't plan on anywhere near 4k lbs of cargo at any time. And I must admit that low bridges and low power lines are a concern of mine. I know there are apps and other sources to help plan routes when hauling an RV.....I will definitely look into those things before our trips.

Definitely do some research on low bridges, and measure your height while hooked up. I came across one in PA that I wasn't expecting. Fortunately, I had an easy turnaround to avoid it and reroute. I discovered you can find low bridge locations in the Park Advisor app and it came in handy.

Only difference I saw was tire scrubbing. Just rotate the tires. Some states have restricted roads and a 3 axle has a slightly longer KPRA.
