5K hitch almost maxing out your MDT??? My Pin is well over 5K and my rear axle rating is not achieved with that load.

Think it's time for the class 8. No way is that truck not overloaded. I want to feel confident and safe. Many may think the big Freightliner or Volvo is overkill but try it once and you will not go back.
Just got back from a trip where I met a couple with a large DRV and they had purchased a big, so they thought, 3500 dually. Said if the test drive proved that they would not be slowed by hills they would be ok. Dealer hooked rig up to heavy trailer of similar weight to 5th wheel. They completed paper work for purchase and headed out of Yuma. First hill they slowed to 45. Returned to dealer and returned truck for credit. Wife had been smart enough to have it written into the contract that if they slowed down no sale. You can imagine how much the dealer cried but too bad for him.
Purchased a Volvo class 8 with a beautiful 10 or 12 foot box and are very happy.
Moral of the story, size does matter. Physics is physics.

I have been down to 45mph but that is with 32,500# combined and climbing OVER 6% grades. Rock solid towing in ALL conditions.

We are happy with our 2016 41 RSSB4. A few minor issues, but nothing we can complain about yet. We recently took CO-139 to get to Moab, and boy was that a rough road. We avoided it on the way back because it was in such poor condition, but the trailer still held up well. I can't imagine how a trailer with a smaller frame would have fared in the same conditions.

In regards to the last couple posts, the 7% grade wasn't an issue for our Ram with 4.10 gears and the aisin transmission, but the speed limit on that road is also pretty low for the steep parts. Haven't had any issues on steep climbs at regular highway/interstate speeds, and I swear the transmission never gets above 170 degrees when pulling. Ever.

I do think DRV might be a bit conservative on their dry weights, as our trailer came in much heavier than expected when fully loaded. I'm kicking myself now because we never got our own dry weight, but right now (with a full freshwater tank) we are 1300-2000 pounds over the 21,000 GVWR of the trailer. And that's with a pin weight of ~4,940 pounds. Needless to say we won't be going down the road with 100 gallons of water on board unless we need to for boondocking.

In this pic I weighed 32,500# combined and that was with 100Gal water on board for a boondock weekend.

My trans stays cool also on long grades even at 100 degrees.

But what is your rear axle weight? Mine runs cool, power good but overloaded on rear axle.

Rear axle rating is 9,750#, my rear axle weight is 9,580#. That is with 100 gallons fresh water on board.

Rear air ride keeps truck sitting level up to max rear axle rating.

Ah, okay. If you head over to the DRV section of the Thor forums http://www.thorforums.com/forums/f29/ you'll find more information on these trailers.

The CCC ratings are there, but a couple have a 5,000 hitch weight.
That's a load to almost max out my MDT.
Looked at a Tradition today, salesman opened the Basement door & the door frame Buckled ( door side ) Oh My Full Body Paint
You can imagine straighten & Repaint.
Felt sorry for the Guy.
What else can go wrong?
High Dollar units, but how well built?

Fulltimer
I am still puzzling over the overloading of the MDT. A class 78 is OK if you are prepared to live with the disadvantages.. a MDT is the best of both worlds..

What is your rear axle rated for ?
