Fifth Wheel Bunkhouse

I have decided that the 11800 pound Komfort is not leaving me enough comfort room for towing. Can anyone recommend a Fifth Wheel Bunkhouse that would be good for my family (3 daughters). I need something that is well built for 4 seasons and most importantly 10000 pounds or less.

Do you already have a tow vehicle? If so, please post back what ya have (make,model,year,engine,rar,GVWR,CGWR...etc) as that will help us help you find a compatable 5-r.

I can't quite tell by the floorplan drawing, but Forest River's Rockwood 8286WS looks to have 3 bunks in the rear (plus an outside kitchen) & comes in at 9522 GVWR. I've tried to look at pictures of ones for sale on the internet to confirm the 3 bunks, but photos of that room are not very good at showing what's back there.

My vehicle is a 2010 Dodge Ram 3500 SLT short bed with 3.73 gear ratio axle. I have the 6.7 liter Cummins turbo diesel engine. Curb weight is 6826 / GVWR 10,100 lb / GCWR 21,000 lb / GAWR front 5000 lb / GAWR rear 6200 lb. Tow capacity is 14,200 lbs and the maximum payload is 3360 lbs. 2 adults and 3 girls will be in the vehicle.

Go with the Coachman Chaparral 330FBH

I have 3 daughters as well, 6-11. I just bought one of these, it meets the criteria you’ve listed so far: http://coachmenrv.com/products/model...ries=Chaparral

There are a couple of big things that led me to this model (and many little things):
  • Second bathroom – having 3 daughters (maybe a spouse?) you probably can appreciate why this is important.
  • Full-time bunks – we hated constantly converting the sofa to a bunk each night (and back in the morning) on our old trailer. Each girl needed their own space they could count on.
  • Walk-around main bathroom – we had a big peeve with walk-through bathrooms, they don’t make any sense to us.
  • Good quality & workmanship – I’ve been to several RV shows (including the last Hershey), and mapped out every conceivable brand and bunk-house (can show you if interested), saw many in person. None equaled the quality of this Coachman. I was originally trying to decide between a Cougar and a Wildcat until I saw this, no contest.

That's got a GVWR of 11,930 lbs. That's nearly 2000 lbs over what the OP stated he's now looking for & weighs more than the Komfort he chose not to go with.

Actually, the OP didn't specify if he/she's looking for dry weight, or GVWR of 10k. My rig has a dry weight under 10k, so I mentioned it.

I also couldn't find any specs on the Komfort, so I don't even know what the 11k was to compare.

True. I assumed, my bad. We'll have to wait on the OP to confirm. Knowing this would definitely make a difference & give him more options.

Now that I look more closely at the specs Komfort does have, that 11,800 might be a dry weight. The next size model below the one he's looking at has a dry wt of 10,468 lbs/ GVWR of 15,500 lbs.

Where did you find specs, all I saw on their site was TBD's. I even tried a couple of dealer sites?

I got the weight of the Komfort straight off of one that Bares RV has in Bartow FL. I am also looking at dry weight. I don't intend on loading it too much other than some clothes and a little food. Most grocery shopping will be done after we get to a camp site.

If you go to komfort-rvs.com's main webpage, click on the Weights & Measures tab. It will bring up a page & only 1 model of each (1 TT & 1 5-r) actually have weights. Granted, we don't know all the numbers on the Komfort John originally wanted, but we can make some close approx's based on the model right before it.

floridarvfam,

Ok, so if you want less than 10,000 lb dry weight, John's Chaparral works, & I do like it having 1.5 baths for your size of family.

The Jayco 31.5FBHS would also fit your needs. Jayco has an excellent reputation. Doesn't have the extra half bath that the Chaparral does, but it does get the kids up in the "loft" area, leaving the entire downstairs free for the adults.

Keystone Cougar 328QBS is another. Our previous 5-r was a Cougar. Good bang for the buck with Cougars. There's probably plenty of other Keystones that would work for you, too. I just didn't take the time to research further.

I believe all the above I listed are also within your tow capacity, GCWR & payload. Have fun shopping & let us know what you get.

That CF31QB also has an option for a half bath (you lose the pantry) like the Chaparral.

Yes, I've seen several with a second bathroom option, most ask you to give up something, if it's not the pantry it's the entertainment center.
I like that about the Chaparral, we still have both a pantry and entertainment, it also gives us a coat closet by the door.
That said, the CF31QB is considerably shorter and lighter than mine, that's a big plus.
