Fuel tank

Does anyone have experience with replacing your standard fuel tank with a 61 gallon. I don't want a something in my bed. Titan has a replacement tank, it's expensive but I really want the space in the bed for other things. It almost doubles my fuel.

A couple of neighbors here in the park with the bigger tanks installed in late model Fords : I'll ask to see if they feel it was worth the $$$.

Yes, there over $1000. It would be nice to know if it was worth it.

Have a friend with the Titan in his '10 Chev 3500 LB--I think he has 54 gal available. Made a huge difference on our AK trip last summer.

We have a 60 gallon replacement tank under our 2011 Chevy 1 ton short bed.
We really like it. It gives a much longer range and peace of mind.
Yes, worth the money.

OK finally talked to both , Ford P/U owners about the replacement tanks .

2016/17 trucks, quad cabs, one LB the other SB , cost was 1,300>1,500, both are full timers and said that the , original tank size was a joke. Towing range of 150>170 miles then having to find fuel was a real PIA. One even wrote Ford saying the designer that decided on the OEM tank size should be fired.
Now both agree that not having to stop for fuel before you're ready to stop for lunch , was worth the cost, but if a larger OEM tank wasn't offered in a new truck when they're ready, for replacement trucks , they'd switch brands.

Just how far do you drive when towing?
And how many times do you do it?

I have a 36 gallon OEM tank......10 miles to gallon when towing
300 miles and I am done for the day.
Otherwise I just pull in ....fill up and take a long stretch/walk
And we FTd towing weekly

Enlarging the fuel capacity was the first thing I did to both our diesel powered camper haulers to around 50-60 gallon usable. That gave us a 500+ mile range. I built two side tanks for the Ford and one huge tank for the Dodge that fit in the center over the driveshaft. I think they cost in the neighborhood of $100-$200.00 for each truck, but that was a few years ago. If you can't do it, you may save a few dollars by having someone else build it, although liability may be an issue there.

Our trucks were used to travel cross country (all over the US) at a time when we were still working and time was limited so it made sense to me that limiting fuel stops would equal more miles traveled in a day. It was also comforting to know there was enough fuel to get across some areas of the country, including AK, where places to refuel were few and far between.

I don't think you will ever regret adding more fuel capacity, especially if you go on long trips. I know I never did.

Best of luck.

Steve
