We are looking at a 2011 carriage Cameo 36FWS. Does anyone have any info on the full wall sides and how they hold up? It looks like an awfully big slide to maybe have problems with.

Carriage uses gear driven electric slide systems which have historically been fairly reliable. In the latter years before their demise, there were a few problems with motors working loose or shearing pins in their gears. There are workarounds that seem very good if a problem occurs. That full wall slide is a beautiful rig and Carriage made very good products. They are considered full timer rigs, well insulated and comfortable. Mine is now 13 years old, have had very few problems and still looks great in spite of the miles on it.

We have had no problems with ours. It is an attention getter though.

On edit-
The only issue I see is when the matteras needs replacing we will have to find one that can fold. The bottom 6 inches of our king folds up out of the way for the 2 opposing slides to come together.

I know that there are several manufacturers building FWS units. The engineer in me has to question the structural integrity of the unit as well as the long term durability. There is a long unsupported roof span and the frame has to carry the exrea weight of the slide.

Only time will tell about the long term durability of the FWS mechanisms.

We have a customer who has one; only one I've seen. His is a permanent set up though, so no constant travel or slide movement.

From the engineering stand point, the inside upper wall area that the slide is on looks like a big truss from front to back. The slide itself is supported by the lower frame with 3 attachment points where the gears and slide mechanisms are. The roof area over the slide is just as solid as any other area when walking on the roof. If it was a wood framed unit I might have concerns, but being tubular aluminum and designed correctly I don't see any issues.

I wish that I had one BUT do not want to spend the money on a new unit or even a used unit to get one.

The last new RV with a full-wall slide that I was in was the Winnebago Tour 42QD.

That would be my choice for the money but it ain't going to happen.
