Generator ~ Swap the old one or buy a new one?

We have a 2002 Montana with an Onan generator installed. We are looking to trade the old Montana for a shiny new one. I'm trying to determine if it would be smarter to leave the generator installed when we trade and buy a new one for the new trailer. Or, take it out and install in the new trailer. It works like a champ and has low hours.

Since I just had this brainstorm, I haven't done any due diligence. What's the approximate cost for a generator with installation? Any opinions?

Thanx,

Jim

When we traded our old travel trailer in, my late wife and I removed the generator from it. She had a generator compartment built-in to the TT, when she ordered it and didn't want to let go of her $4,000 generator. We just bought another fifth wheel and the Onan will be installed in it.

Personally I would buy with the generator factory installed.

Good luck with your decision.

I agree with you both.

I hate to let a $4000 generator go with the trade-in since it will only change the trade-in by $500.

I'd rather have a turn-key solution but the generator wouldn't be factory installed anyway. It's my understanding that Montana does the generator prep but the actual generator and installation are a "dealer installed option."

Does anyone have a good idea about what a generator install costs currently? I have to think the price has gone up since 2002.

I have no idea what a dealer would charge for a gen. install. But if they are going to only give you $500 for a trade in, I would yank that puppy out of there in a hurry. You could get more on craigslist! Most Montana's can be order with the gen. prep factory installed. Most mobile RV techs or electrical types can install, or a good DIY project.

I was thinking along those same lines. The Montanas we've been looking at all are prepped and if the install cost me another $500, I've still only got about $1000 net tied up in the project. As far as DIY, that's a non-starter. I'm an electrician by trade and have been a truck mechanic so the thing is I know I CAN do it but I'm not sure if I WILL do it. . . I've got some projects holding from the trailer before this one . . .

If the dealer was only offering $500.00 more, I would start with another dealer. The difference quoted to me for my fifth wheel with the generator and one identical without it was $3000.00.
