Hello Everyone,

I was reading posts about RV tanks and dumping and I came across the Geo Method. I also read a post where someone said "don't forget that your hot water heater is a holding tank too. It should be flushed to avoid rotten egg smell". Well .... been there, smelled that! It turns out our hot water tank was full of crud.

So here's my question: Can I use the Geo Method on my hot water tank? Is there a way to get the water softner into the hot water tank other than pumping it in through the fresh water tank? Is it OK to put water softner in the fresh water tank?

Thank you!

Carol

i would be hesitant to put th ewater sofenter calgon stuff in the fresh water tank....
it may make you a bit more ummmm regular,
like every ten minutes.
i guess you could do it to get the water heater flushed, then snatize the whole sysmte before drinking the fresh water again.
i do know at our fish shack the water is very very soft and within two days of being back the tank sensors work again and the water leaves no more stains

Hi Carol,

FYI, the Geo Method is used in maintaining "holding" tanks, not fresh water or water heaters. Do a search on line for the Geo Method & you'll run across it.

I'd be cautious about adding anything to the water in the water heater if you have an anode. The additive might build up on the anode rod and cause it to fail prematurely.

Whenever I pull the anode rod to drain my water heater (for winterizing) I spray out the inside to remove scale and flush out the sediment that collects in the area below the drain opening.

I use the little RV water tank filler hose extension, as it will fit into the hot water tank with room around it for water to escape, and it seems to work well at getting the scale, deposits, and gunk out of the lower part of the tank.

Recently I picked up a "tank saver" by NW Leisure Products at a close out at an RV store. It's basically a purpose built wand w/shutoff valve that attaches to a garden hose, and is designed to flush gunk out of RV water heater tanks... Haven't tried it yet, but the narrower wand looks like it would work well...

Anyhow, I'd try spraying out the tank before I'd consider putting something in it...

The usual water system sanitizing should remove all smell or taste from the fresh water system, including water heater. If you want to use something stronger and not risk polluting anything, use white vinegar or concentrated lemon juice in solution. Both are acidic, for good cleaning properities, and still safe to drink if you don't get it all flushed out. You know white vinegar is used to clean coffee maker heating elements of scale and deposits-right!
