What brand awning?
If it an A&E then on the end nearest the front there will be a lock that you can flip using the wand. You would also unlatch the travel arm locks and losten the screws on the arms. Then by inserting the wand hook end into the loop on the awning you can pull and it should unroll. Pull it all the way open and then life the inner arm supports and tighten the screw wheels while pushing out on the awning arm. This will tension the awning. Then lift the arms up by pulling up on the handles to raise the awning to a patio position. Harder to explain than to do.

Carefree awnings work the same as A&E. The only exceptions are box awnings that crank out - but I have not seen those on 5th wheels.
