We're in the process of trading our MH for a fifth wheel. We've looked at so many and thought we wanted something in the 30 to 33' range. Then looked at some around 36 ft. Then looked at some at around 39 ft. The best deal we can get with our trade is on the 39 footers. Are these units too big? Should we be considering them? Our plan is to try to leave it parked for 1 to 4 weeks at a time at different campgrounds. We will buy a truck to pull it once we have found the 5th wheel. Would appreciate any input.

Only you can decide if it is too big or too small. You will need to consider how you will be using it and how much room to relax in you will need. The main thing to consider is what makes the wife happy.

Depends on what kind of CG's you want to visit. The larger size will limit you.

If you're going to be "camping" in National forests, state parks, etc., then the 39' would be a handful. If, on the other hand, you'll be using RV parks with pull-thrus and full hookups, most newer parks will be able to handle a 39' 5th wheel with no problem.

If you are not going to be using pull through spots as a general rule, you may want to look at a 450 or other vehicle that has a greater steering capability.
My trailer is 36 overall and has been interesting to get into some positions. (We are into the more out of the way areas with the toy hauler)
I have looked at a couple and gone back and said 'no way', and have had the 'watching crowd' say good job.
As Rusty stated if your planed, or main parks are large enough, oh, if you travel through town regularly, keep the streets in mind also.

I agree. If you go with a 39' get a F-450 to pull it. I have a F-350 and pull a 40' but turning it while backing in doesn't work well or trying to get around town. As far as pulling it a 36 - 40 will not be much difference except the weight and with a 450 you won't have to worry about it.

We full time, have a 40' & pull it with a F550. Easy to tow, but there are some CG where parking is an issue, but wouldn't have gone smaller, regardless.

We have a 36; 37.5 overall. Seldom a problem and space appreciated.

We traded a 40 foot motor home for a <35 foot 5th wheel but everyone's preferences are different.

One big factor is the size of the truck you'll need to buy to pull it. I did not want a dually, so we opted for a shorter, lighter trailer and I'm glad we did. Everything is a tradeoff...
