Kayak Carrier

Does anyone have any recommendations for a kayak carrier that goes on top of the truck when you're towing your 5er. We have a Chevy Silverado 3500 dually pulling a 35 ft Vilano 5er. Last year while in FL we saw one we liked. We should have paid more attention and maybe even written down the name but we didn't. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Edit: I forgot to mention that we have a tonneau cover. That might make it harder.

Hi,

I fell in love with the products from The World's Most Useful Roof Racks | Rhino-Rack back in the early 2000's. I have their FOLDING J HOOKS for my kayak. They are amazing still to this day and perform beautifully!

One of the big reasons I bought this was I could lay the J flat when not in use. Easy enough to run a cable lock through them if wished. ALSO they fit EVERY kayak I have put on the roof the easiest!

I belonged to a kayak club and we had about 60 members -- of which there were multiple kayak owners (Parents with kids, couples, etc.) My personal kayak is wider and shaped a little funnier compared to other kayaks as it is harder to 'tip'. No matter who's kayak I helped transport, everyone had good fits in tough Montana winds, (plus allowed to drive 80 mph legally...) So no matter the wind direction getting to a location, going through canyons via car, wind angles, etc... Every time was a joy. Several in our club sold off the "Y" brand so well known, and replaced with mine.

Take the time to also note you can buy holders to put paddles, fishing rods, skis, ski or walking poles, shovels, etc etc etc on your rack as well.

One thing we all also learned the shape of the "bar" the J hooks go onto, is oval and cuts down dramatically on wind noise in our opinion. We could open the moon roof all the way and still easily carry on conversations.

I also have one of the 'cloth bags' for gear (not the hard plastic ones), it truly is waterproof and I have really put that to the test on several cross country ventures. I actually built a lightweight pvc frame for it so it would be up on the bars, and not sit on the roof of the car (I didn't want paint damage from rubbing against wind) and it is a dream.

Customer service was always a dream and at one point I misplaced the "tightening device" for putting the rack on (attaching the rack frame -- which do lock btw) they sent me a new one 48 hr express at no charge!

I really can't say that I've had any disappointments at all. I also truly love the tie downs!! The metal buckle slides into a heavy cloth that protects your car paint from them once buckled down. They even have straps that lock!

Have a good look at their site, you might find other items you'd like and not think of.

Nope, don't work for them. But boy a satisfied customer for a decade +. Still using it all.

Sam

You might want to look at this over the cab design that only mounts in the rear bed. Made for 5th wheelers.

Paddling is one of my main pursuits. I've owned a pair of QCC 700 kayaks and paddled seemingly everywhere for the past 15 years. I have recently ordered a motorhome endining a 9 month search. I don't want to tow and roof mounting is out. Looked at take-apart kayaks and did not find anything that I wanted. I ordered a wooden boat kit and paid a local craftsman to modify the kit and build it. I now have a 16'10" boat that takes apart into 3 sections. The bow is just over 2' and stores in the cockpit. The main section is 7'10". The three sections easily fit in one of the pass throughs. End result is not a QCC but does really well. Mark
