Limits on Trailer length and width

The 2015 AAA Digest of Motor Laws driving laws.AAA.com identifies 20 states whose laws limit trailer lengths to 40' (including CA, FL, NJ and OH) and 8 which have 96" width limits (including GA, MO, NY, and NC).

Does anyone have experience with the enforcement of these laws. Are dealers in these states allowed to sell 5ers that exceed the limits? Should I be concerned about them? Any other comments/observations?

Don't worry about width. The vast majority of RVs are over 96" wide. Most commerical trucks are 102" anyways.

The only state I've heard of busting people for length is California, and that was mostly for exceeding 65' overall (45' motorhomes plus trailers).

THose limits do not apply to interstate highways. Once you get off the interstate highway, there is a limit (I can't remember what it is) as to how far you can go to reasonably reach the services that a highway user would need: food, fuel, lodging, repair services, etc.

Any state that would give RVers an un reasonably difficult time reaching where they want to go doesn't need your tourist/RV travel dollars anyway.

In CA you can't go more than a mile off the main roads if your RV is over 40'. But we did it a few years back in our 41' MH towing the Odyssey with no problems. Got stopped and ticketed on I-5 for speeding with the 45' rig towing the same Odyssey and nothing was said about being close to or maybe slightly over the length limit. Hate that 55 mph limit on a downhill with the MH being so quiet! Just let her roll too fast.
The width limits don't apply to Federal highways, just state and local ones.
