Question looking for lite weight 5th ,abt 25 feet to tour CA

Looking for lite weight 5th ,abt 25 feet to tour CA and the rest of the west coast. We enjoy staying in national parks, forests and state parks. The areolite 27 with the rear living area has caught my eye to this point as all the specs point to be easily towable by a 1/2 ton truck and appears to be in my price range. Haveing a 36 dp I have no idea what i'm getting in to with 5th wheels. I can use all the help I can get.

Thanks
John

If you are limiting yourself to a half ton truck (and wish to remain within specs) you will have to get a tiny 5th wheel. You need to consider not only the towing capacity, but the ability of the half ton to carry the pin weight of the trailer.

One formula to keep in mind, the TRUE towing capacity (not what the dealer or manual says) of any vehicle is: The truck's GCWR minus the weight of the truck when ready to tow.

since my last post I've found several other 5th,s that would work can anyone have info or thoughts on these

1. keystone couger 275
2. prowler lynx 27 1/2
3. aerolite 27
I'm sure there are other lite weights out there in that size range please tell me what I have missed

Thanks
John

Hi,

We have a Prowler Lite fifth wheel (825 5x) which weights about 4,500 pounds empty and probably close to 6,000 pounds loaded & ready to go. It is a 25 foot model but is 28'10" in total length front to back. If you assume 20% of that being the king pin weight, that gives you about 1,200 pounds of king pun weight plus hitch (200 pounds?) plus gas and passengers for your tow vehicle to be able to carry (plus pulling the RV).

Ours has bunks so would not suit you but it gives you an idea of a light weight 5th model & size.

Good luck, Paul
