This whole conversation has been a real eye opener. I don't think we have ever checked the air pressure in the spare. It is up under the rig and you never think of crawling under there to check the spare. We DO travel with a small air pump so we could add air but it would take time.

We will probably chain and padlock this thing as per the other post herein.

The good news is that we have found a rim in stock 50 miles north and can get a new tire in time for our trip. If we do not have time or the material for the mounting we can chain it to the bed of the pickup.

We will be leaving here July 1 for the rally, with stops at Rocky Mtn Nat Park, Moab UT, then Mesa Verde Nat Park. I love the west and can't wait. Oh and 3 days in Sedona after the rally then home.

We got the rim and the tire and also ordered a rear bumper mount to attach the new spare to the bumper. It will also be locked. If it ever gets lost again we will know it.

We have driven many miles with our 5er. Six years ago I took the spare tire from under the trailer and placed it vynal covered to match the paint, with a round 1/2 inch cut of plywood under the cover, and locked with 2 bike lock cables that were passed through the holes in the trucks bed.
Now should I have a flat I don't have to climb under the trailer with traffic flying by, and have easy access to the tire, never mind getting it stolen.
