New bearing job - do races go too?
I am about to replace my fiver's bearings after about 20K miles. Three years ago I replaced the bearings and the races too. The races appear perfect still. Do I need to replace them too? Iam using the exact same bearings as 3 years ago.(Timkens). Also used Timken races last change.
All advice and experiences welcome.

If you replace bearings, might as well replace races. Already in there.
But, why replace them? Just clean, repack properly, adjust brakes (replace if necessary), and reinstall and test.

X2, Last time I needed any ; you couldn't by a brg alone , came as a set brg and race. New on new is the way to go.
But as in the other post , if this is a maintenance servicing of the brgs then a repack after inspection with new seals, is the way it's done most times. Any wear on the rollers transfers to the race, clean everything up, and check for wear , don't mix the brgs to another race .

A properly greased and assembled wheel bearings should last well beyond 20,000 miles.

I agree. I would clean, inspect and repack them. No need to replace unless the bearings and race are scored, damaged. overheated and such...

There are different grades of bearings. I replaced the made in China with those not, SKF, used Amsoil synthetic grease and will not touch it for years other than to adjust the brakes.

They should be changed as a set. The race is the cheapest piece anyway.
I carry two complete sets, bearings, races, seals, washer, nut and locks in my clown closet. If it goes wrong on the road, it goes very bad. I figure the odds of either one entire axle or one side going is pretty slim.

WHY???? 5r bearings should last 200,000 miles. I clean and lube with synthetic grease every 40,000 along with a thorough brake and spring inspection. 30 yrs a fleet manager.

I get it.. If he wants to change bearing so be it. His question was not if, but if on the races.
It's predictive maintenance.
