Noisey ducts

I need some help. Is there a way to quiet the air duct in the basement from the expanding and contracting of the metal when the heat is on? When it "bangs" it will wake us up. Furnace has no issues just the metal duct work in the basement. Thanks for any ideas. Bruce

Since I do not have the problem, I do not have first hand experience other than with our home heating system. I would try using duct wrap insulation and tape and securing the duct from movement.

Chances are the duct is doing what is called "oil canning". In other words it is changing shape some thing like the bottom of the old style oil cans. If you can locate the place it is doing that then you can either brace the spot, put a crease in it, or even put a small dent in it with a hammer.

Sounds like they have 10lbs of duct crammed in a 5lb hole. Or they have a kink somewhere that is reacting to the heat/cold.

Thanks for the replies. I will try the hammer/crease first and see what that will do. I don't know if I could get wrap around it how the duct work is attached.

Hi Guys, Had a chance with the weather being chilly and fixed the problem. I had some foam and wedged it between a metal cross member and the heat duct. No more noise. Thanks for the input.

Glad you got it fixed! That can be one annoying sound.
