Partial Paint?

I am a big fan of full-body painted RVs. I will not own a decal-equipped RV again, due to the peeling/cracking/fading problem with them.

That being said, there are some "partial paint" RVs out there, such as DRV and Lifestyle fifth wheel trailers, etc. My questions is for those of you with partial paint rigs.

How do the non-painted white parts hold up in the sun? Does waxing the whole coach, painted and non-painted parts alike, keep the white gel coat looking good? Am I going to regret buying a partial paint rig, or will it stay shiny and brite over time if I keep it waxed?

I don't want to make a mistake with our fulltime RV purchase, but there are some nice rigs that have partial paint out there. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Roy

We went partial paint on ours, a $10K paint job was hard to swallow. Looking forward to hearing the input from this thread.

I have a partial painted rig. Glad it is partial paint and not decals. No real different care so far on my 2011 rig. I do wax it...painted and unpainted sections the same. Wax on, wax off.

It added approx. $4000 to the cost of the rig.

I would prefer a fully painted rig just because they look the best. 2nd best is partial paint.

Reason I ask is that our dealer has a fifth wheel coach on his lot right now that is optioned pretty close to what we want, but it has partial paint (that looks really nice, BTW) and I just don't want to make a mistake that I'll regret regarding exterior maintenance and keeping the rig shiny for years.

I opted NOT to get the full body paint when I ordered my new 2014 Lifestyle. It was a $9k option and for that model year both color options were on the dark side for my taste. Plus, I KNOW that the darker colors translate to more heat. That may be a good thing in the cold climates but NOT in the hot.
At the time, Lifestyle offered a tan gel coat color option but I did not like the look of it.
For the late 2015 models they are offering a partial body paint and I really like it.! I do not know what the cost is but I would have seriously considered it.
I guess my point is that you can always get your rig painted. A lot of the RV companies contract their paint jobs out to off property facilities. So if they can do it, we can have them painted just as well after market. Just food for thought.

We have partial on our Carrilite. Keeping the whole rig waxed is the key. We are a 2009 that has lived in the Texas sun for several summers. Twice a year it gets a full hand wax done. In between those times, It gets a wash and wax wash and a spray wax apllied. It looks great still.

2007 DRV here. Partial paint (decals) as in sig. Still looks good as new. Wash and wax twice a year.

We have a partial paint Drv that we bought in Nov 2011, no issues as long as you care for it. The white gel coat needs protection from oxidation. There are lots of suggestions as to what to use. We have used nothing but Wash Wax All on this since new. It is a waterless product. Apparently, it has UV protection because we have no oxidation. Easy to use, pricey up front but a great product. No connection to the company, just really like the product.

So it sounds like partial paint is doable. I think we'll also start with the Wash Wax All product for day to day cleaning, but I intend to put a serious coat of wax on the front cap to make bug removal easier. Perhaps a coat of Rejex once or twice a month.

Well, as you can see in my avatar and signature, we went ahead and bought the partial paint DRV. So, we'll see how she holds up. The part of the rig that worries me the most are the DRV decals on the front cap. They are more normal decals than the ones on the rear and sides, which are those thick, raised, classy looking ones that should hold up well. The ones on the front are subjected to the most direct sun and are blasted by bugs kamikazes every time we travel. Guess I'll have to get up in the truck bed and give the front cap some frequent TLC!

Congrats on your new home on wheels. I think you'll be ok with that one. Ours is a 2007 and the front cap is still in good shape after 8 years of sun and snow. Yes, traveling collects lots of air born critters but they all come off.
