Just a reminder that the Reese fiver hitch (and probably others)have moving parts under that massive plate. It is very important to spray some protective grease or oil on the lock mechanism joints once in a while to prevent rust. Especially important while the unit is sitting unused in the winte wx. I neglected that to my peril a couple years ago and one of the rusty clips failed when I pulled the release handle. No harm done but I was stuck with a useless hitch until I could get new clips to replace the bad ones. The clips are like thin washers, open on one side, that going into a groove so as to hold the hinges in place. CRS keeps me from using their proper name. FWIW Bill

Reese's web site:

http://www.reese-hitches.com/

Has downloadable parts lists, installation instructions and other good info. That may be of help.

Inspect the clips inside lube with grease ,out side on top lube with grease to top of the well cut around the pin ,spray paint over grease to make a seal over grease and keep clean and rust free till next inspection ,just remove paint skin clean and inspect ,repeat lube paint . Skipper, I had never heard of painting over grease. But I will give it a shot when I pull and clean the hitch again this spring. Thanks, Bill

Accepted. My post has been deleted.

I wire brush and repaint any rough spots of the hitch each year. So, I may "give it a shot". I'll turn 70 later this year but still learn a new trick now and then. Some of them work. Regards Bill.
