So I want to remove the pin box so I can bolt on the Pullrite capture plate for my slider hitch.

I see that the only way to remove the pin is to slide a wrench into the backside of the pin box (small slot) to hold the nut on each bolt that holds the sliding pin box mechanism. This almost looks impossible (the lower bolts) so if I am missing something or someone has some advice to remove the pin, please speak up or forever hold your peace

Pullrite now offers a capture plate that does not require drilling of the pin box. It just fits over the existing pin/pin box and affixes with four set screws. I mounted mine in about two minutes.

These are made specific for each pin box. Measure your pin box carefully re:

Then call Pullrite customer service. They will probably exchange the one you have for one of the quick connect kinds.

The set screw adapter plates are only available for a few pin boxes. I talked to Pullrite and they have "engineered" additional adapter plates but they are not yet in production.

I just had to remove my pin box and delivery it to the hitch shop for the "universal" adapter plate installation. They used my old adapter plate and charged $150 labor and $39 for parts.

You might want to look real close, the nuts on my pin box are welded, I just had to loosen the bolts from the outside to move it down. When I first looked at it I thought the same as you but it turned out to be real easy.

Welded...mine were not and they were a bear to get back on and locked back down. Some manufacturers are smarter than the others.

Well, I stand corrected! They are not, sure thought they were as I don't remember using a wrench on them but I must have. I remember looking through that little hole in the back wondering how I was going to get to them but I did somehow. Looked at them while I was out there playing with my gears and though, darn, I gotta go correct that but no, Ken beat me to it!

I paid to have mine installed when the hitch was installed in my truck. On ours, the adapter plate needed some additional steel welded to the pin box . As others have mentioned, make sure to measure your pin box plate. Mine was much shorter than the Pullrite plate.
As for the install, they installed it without removing the complete pinbox from the trailer. I have had to adjust my pinbox down to get the trailer more level. It was towing nose down. All you need is a box end wrench, a breaker bar with a socket and a cheater bar. I found it just as easy to put the box wrench inside the pinbox and use the breaker bar/socket on the outside. You will also need a 250lb torque wrench. My torque specs were about 225 Ft/Lb for the bolts. BEWARE, the pin box is a bit heavy....
