My guess is you had some green horn that didnt know the 5th wheel plate on a class 9 tractor (single axel or twin screw) will hook right up no problem. Electrical connections may need adapter and a electric brake control but to just get you out of harms way. A landall 50' trailer is your only other choice and tyeing it down to a trailer isnt really a option , there isnt any good strong points exposed on the frame and the front landing gear is a little weak to carry its weight on a trailer banging around.

Any large truck(semi-tractor) with a fifth wheel(Holland) hitch can tow a 5th wheel RV in an emergency. This is just one of the advantages of having a RV emergency road service. They will send the appropriate assistance for your rig.
We had a blowout last August. Good Sam ERS sent a HDT wrecker to change to my spare. I calculate the cost of the wrecker, 2 men, and 2 hours work was about 3 times my annual premium.

UPDATE: Both Coachnet and Good Sam ERS have 3 levels of service, both companies priced the same. Pick the level best for your needs.

Class 9??? Man, you've made every truck classificationchart in North America obsolete.

I've heard good things recently about Coach Net road service for RVs. One full-time RVer I know got his bus conversion stuck in soft ground. Coach Net sent a heavy-duty wrecker which got him out in short order. He reports that they have provided good service on several other occasions as well.

I've had Good Sam road service for a couple of years. Thinking about changing to Coach Net on the basis of Nick's recommendation.

If you want more follow up, take a look at http://www.gypsyjournal.net/NicksBlog.htm Nick Russell is the guy. We met him and his wife Terry at the Escapees rally in Goshen, IN. They are full-time RVers and publish the Gypsy Journal newspaper.

I too have Coach-Net and never had a problem, but then I never had to be towed. I did meet someone who did, and they sent two vehicles out. One to tow the truck and another to tow the 5er.

BUT to your issue on the GSP. The Garden State Parkway has a towing contract that give exclusivity to a particular towing company. NOBODY else can go onto the parkway to tow. And they are only setup to tow cars or light trucks. My B-I-L found that out when his truck broke down. AAA could not come get him. State Police got the parkway contracted company to tow him off of the parkway to a parking lot. Then AAA could come get him.

Had mine towed last Friday with a wrecker that had a 5th wheel adapter. No problems.
