Here in Texas we have always had to have safety chains on the gooseneck hitches... About three years ago, when I took my 5th wheel trailer in for the yearly inspection, they would not pass it until I installed safety chains on it also...
Talk about a PITA to hook up! I had to climb into the bed from the rear to hook up the chains... One of the many reasons I now own a Class A

I have had to lock my down one time. Camper locked down and truck stopped, all in a straight line.Love these disc brakes.

I am sure a huge percentage of drivers are running around without their brake controllers properly adjusted nor the knowledge of how to adjust it.

I added disc brakes this past summer on mine and it stops very quickly, even at 27k total!

This was a separation and was NOT a gooseneck. Unfortunately the driver died. This hitch broke after the rig left the pavement. The trailer didn't even tip over

I watched the whole hour of the original video posted on this thread. Hitch didn’t fail. It broke loose from the rails. Too much torque for those pins to handle.
This guy was pulling a tri-axle, Toy-hauler with an single rear axle, F250! Way too much fiver for that truck.
We started out with a 3/4 ton and a fiver. Then a knowledgeable RVer describes this situation: Someone cuts you off and you hard break. Truck and fiver jackknife. Fiver pushes truck sideways and single rear tire breaks away from wheel. Wheel grabs asphalt/concrete. Wheel buckles. Over goes the truck. We traded for a dually. Wider footprint and less chance of a rollover.

The truck is (was) a F250. Probably enough truck. When the yanked the hitch out the rear rail was attached to the hitch on one side and bent slightly. the front rail is till sitting in the bed of the truck.Looks like the hitch rails were installed with 2 bolts on each rail. (Mine has 4). There is no indication of any hitch pins on the front rail. It appears that the front rail was not attached to the hitch. That coupled with an emergency stop would push the trailer over the truck, ripping the hitch out then rolling up onto the truck. No matter ow you see it, it is a sad ending.

No way was it "enough truck. I have had a late model F-250 Lariat diesel and the cargo capacity was a puny 2000#. That toy-hauler probably grossed at 18-20K. Figure 20% pin weight and it's way overloaded. Put the lift kit, "dirt tires' and capacity is further diminished. But I'm sure he looked cool pulling into the campground with that rig. Oh wait, he didn't make it.

Chains are not required on a standard king pin type fifth wheel hitch in California, or any other state of which I'm aware. Goose necks do require chains, however.

New a guy that did just that, but his jaws were open (fogot to close and lock them) and drove away. 5th wheel dropped down on the box of the pickup truck and crushed his box and closed tailgate.ot to mention the damage to his RV. What a sight... even the guys face was interesting to view.
He was my brother, sorry to say... that makes it even more embarrassing. Yikes! Call the insurance company!

That's why you always do a test pull with the 5er wheels chocked before pulling out.
