Running Norcold Two Way Refrigerator with Batteries Removed
I need to disconnect my batteries (2 6volts) so I can equalize them. I need to keep my refrigerator going while the batteries are being equalized, will it hurt the refrigerator to operaate off the AC power with no batteries connected? The equaliztion voltage I will be using is 15.6 vdc.

Use the engine battery while you do it. Make sure you are plugged in.

So I should pull a battery out of my truck to use for the 12vdc the refrigerator needs to operate? I think I'll just shut down the refrig for a few hours while the batteries equalize.

I don't understand why people use 2 six volt batteries in series rather than 2 12 volt batteries in parallel. Cost of buying is not that much greater and you never have to worry about equalizing. JMHO

The plates on 6V batteries are MUCH more robust than 12V batteries.

That is true but with them in series then you have to re-balance them. This is a pain in the butt. If you keep your 12 volt batteries from draining down during inactivity they will last almost as long as 6's. I have never had a 12 last less than 6 or 7 years. How long do your 6's last?

Well, that's what I would do--trade the unit before the batteries go dead...

2 Trojan 6v = 220ah
2 group 24 = apr 160ah
Most all 24G batteries are not true deep cycle, they're deep cycle/starting batteries.
Trojan, or other 6v batteries are true deep cycle and will deliver more use for a longer time. In other words it will take longer to drain them down.
As to the OP's question, doesn't the circuit board in the fridge need 12v?

The control circuits need 12V to run, without 12V the refer won't run at all, even on gas.

Well it turned out to no big deal after all. I just shut the frig off, pulled the batteries to do the equalization and it did not take very long anyway. Highest voltage I saw was 15.3vdc and the batteries were really bubbling and gassing when at the 15.3, got them good and sturred up. As for the Frigerator needing 12vdc, IT DOES, I disconnected the batteries while plugged into my house and the Frigerator quit and would not start on gas or AC.

You are equalizing the cells. 3 in a 6 volt and 6 in a 12 volt battery. Series or parallel, deep cycle batteries are helped by equalizing.

Alll 12 volt no battery questions have the same answer
Depends on the converter.
Most modern converters it won't hurt If you are worried then do this.
one of the handiest tools in my tool box is a Jump Start Battery. the one I have won't start the motor home,, not sure if it would stop my car. But it does a great job on the generator and well.. that can power hardware that does the rest of them.
Get one.. Charge it, and replace the batteries with that 12 volt AGM for the duration of equalizing.

IMO, (and in my experience), "battery equalizing" is NOT necessary.
My original set of house batteries, and the 2nd set, both lasted over 9 years and they were NEVER equalized.
