Slide out awnings
Looking for information on slide out awnings. What are the best brands and styles. I have a 35' Kountry Star by Newmar and want to install the awnings myself. Any help will be appreciated.

Dometic are the most popular. I'd get acrylic fabric if you could also. Lasts longer.
They aren't hard to do, but you will need help, unless the slide is very short. Other than that, it's fairly straight forward.

Just a word of caution about slideout awnings. If you are in a high winds area you will need to bring in the slideouts with the awnings lest they be torn to bits. This makes for a very tight squeeze inside your rig to say the least. For this reason alone (in addition to the extra weight) we'll never install them.

I too thought I needed them, but the pros and cons (for us) did not balance...
IIRC, some here say 3 years and you'll need new fabric just from normal wear and tear ?!?
good luck on your decision... and watch for sales @ CW - they sometimes have installation sales too

Ours have been in some pretty good wind and held up just fine. As a matter of fact I''ve never seen a torn one.
The main advantage I see is when you camp in 100 degree weather. The shading on the roof helps with cooling.

We've owned 3 5th wheels - 2 didn't have slide toppers, 1 did. The current one doesn't - there's a reason for that!! More trouble than they're worth as far as I'm concerned. I don't miss 'em.

Had slide toppers on three motorhomes. Noisy in winds and slides must be brought in in heavy winds. Lost one to billowing at 70mph down the interstate - that was interesting to say the least. I opted for no toppers on the fiver. Some say they have never seen them damaged from wind. Wow, come to Florida in one of our quick thunderstorms and be in a campground. Bahia Honda, overnight, don't know how many awnings and toppers there were decorating rigs and the grounds and floating in the water. Nova Scotia - - more there. Not worth it. And, you can clean off the slide roof if necessary without getting on the roof, so that is a lame excuse. Oh, did I mention bird nests UNDER the topper - - yeh, that is neat too.

As far as billowing out going down the road, someone did not install the anti billowing bar and stop correctly or at all.

If you still need help you can adjust tension for tight awnings and replace them.
Info can be found in QT's 1 & 2 and new #3.

We've had the Carefree slide toppers on our coach for 7 years. I don't like Dometic awnings or slide toppers at all. They are cheaply made and don't hold up well.
We have been a Snowbird in Florida, Winter Texan in the RGV, summers on the coast and the toppers are still going strong. I've never pulled the slides in because of the wind and I've never had to clean the pine needles or leaves from the roof of the slides. I will never have a camper without them.
