Slide out rollups
We have three slides on our 5r. After camping, I climb topside and sweep the slide tops, then slide them in. I've seen some rigs that have what looks like roll up shade-type mounted on top of the slides. How good do these work? Are they hard to mount? Where to get them? Thanks for any advice.

I can't help with the where to get them or how to install them questions but I have them on all four of my slides and they work great. It sure beats having to sweep off the slides each time they're retracted.

I purchased mine at camping world.Easy to install,did everything myself ready to mount and got a freind to come and help me lift it up and slide the awning into the groove that is a track you mount on the trailer.Needs two for that and would be safer with two when working on the ladders.I also would not be with out them.Good luck and all you have to do is measure the lenghth of your slides and camping wold will get you the proper size,mine were a stock item.jeffp,with an 03 coachmen somerset snd a dodge diesel trk.

any RV shop can install them or DIY. Ditto on what everyone else said - I wouldn't be without them.

Agree the diy install seems easily doable...
My ONLY concerns about the diy install are :
What AM I drilling into behind that panel ?
Is it strong enough to hold this or is it electrical ?
Know I would want to seal every insertion into the rv

On the bold, that would be one of the better reasons to DIY?
Also, I would advise you get one with a cover.

No drilling,just some very short stainless steel screws to hold the flange on the side of the rv.The mounting brackets on the slide will not interfere with anything.Look at one up close and then try a short one yourself.The rollup part comes with the proper tension on the spring and all you do after fastening it on the rv is pull a pin on it and it is functional.Simple job,I did two on my rv in one afternoon.jeffp,03 coachmen with two slides.

but no drilling ?!? oh, ok, you define self tapping screws as not drilling
but still,
since I didn't build the rv,
what is behind that no drilling surface to hold the rv rail in ?

Pretty safe bet there's framework around any opening on that coach. Also a safe bet the slideout will have a frame around it's perimeter.
Just to be sure of the size of that framework though - a call to the people that built it might make a first timer sleep better...

Some excellent replies here and good info so far.
So definitely on the list is to call KZ and touch base on the slide hole framing.
Seen some mention, but what about the metal enclosures? Worth it? Does debris get down into the enclosure?
Of course in my ideal world, it slides out, gets covered with leaves, sticks, squirrel food droppings, then when sliding in....self cleans with no debris getting into covering.
Am I in a dream world?

Ideally, you are correct, but in our rv the seals on the slide 'stick' then release as the slide is coming in, so it's not a perfect 'scraper' if you will... why I am considering the covers too
maybe some pam on the slides will make it slide better and not 'grab' too much
but then will it leak ?
