Angry Slide Out won't retract

I have a 2008 Carriage Cameo. The Kitchen slide will not retract. It is an electric gear driven system. When activated the slide moves about 1" and the motor starts to "chatter" (clutch slipping). Carriage is out of business but through a contact I was told that Alko is the manufacture of the Motor and brake mechanism. After searching without any result for a repair shop I was told that I can release the brake and the slide can be manually pushed in. My problem is that the owners manual has little to no information on how to disconnect the motor/brake assembly. Also I have had little to no luck online trying to find any directions or how to videos or drawings. We are stuck until I can retract the slide and get it to a repair shop probably in Indiana. We had planned to leave for Florida in the morning now I am STUCK!

Check out side on top for something stopping it ,like a tree branch .If it moves an inch ,it sounds like it is getting stuck. This happened to me once.

You say the clutch is slipping, but I doubt it. Carriages, the one's I've worked on, tend to slip the actual gears.

Yep, I believe this is a known problem with Cameos of that era. I believe you'll find that the gear tooth engagement in the reduction gear has backed off, and you're just hearing the tops of the gear teeth chattering.

The motor that drives that slide can be accesses from the zipper panel in the under belly fabric. There is a hex drive (forgot the size) that you can get on with a ratchet and socket. You can manually crank the slide in from the drive. The gears are not meshed and can be damaged. There is no clutch to slip.

This is a pretty common issue with that slide. WE had a 2008 35SB3 and the slide was repaired 3 times. The problem is the small mounting bolts and no lock washers to keep the bolts from backing out. AlKo has the manuals and parts list for the slides on line.

The fix is to remove the bolts and use Loctite to install studs, Then rotate the motor into the gear for the proper mesh and lock the motor in place with nuts, lock washers and Loctite.

Hopefully the gears are not damaged and require replacement.

If you try to crank the slide in by hand, turn off the power to the slide motor at the switch. If the power is on, it energizes the brake on the end of the motor. While manually cranking the slide in, get 3 big fellows to push on the o utside to make the cranking easier.

You may have to cut more fabric, because all the access doors weren't put in very well. Just do it, easy to patch up.

Follow Up

So after reading the advice that you all were kind to give me. I found that the bolts holding the motor were really lose. The gears haven't been meshing and after dropping the motor and looking at the gear it really needed replaced. So I am off the Elkhart Indiana in the morning to pickup new motor and gear. Thanks for all of your help and advice!

If you can, replace the small bolts with studs Loctite'd in place. Then use Loctite and star lock washers to lock the nuts down once you get the motor in place.

Some of the owners have drilled and tapped the motor housing for the next larger stud which gave them a bit more holding power.

Did you check the larger gear to make sure it was not chewed up as well?

That company seems to have hard to find parts in addition to practically anything RV related you can possibly need.
If they can't help, it is a possibility Grangers stocks that gear. The hard part will be matching the teeth angles.

Here is a good source of info on the carriage products. There is a good explanation of the slide issues and fixes.
