Slide Outs Leak - BUMMED

Just purchased a used 2000 Alfa Ideal. We just had a torrential rain storm and the slide outs leaked like there was not even a roof. It seems the living room slide out leaks through the windows. It does look like someone tried to reseal them with a type of putty. The bedroom slide out, water just poured in sheets down the wall. I am hoping putting new seals around the slide outs/windows as well as a new roof (saw suggested product on previous post here). Any other ideas or areas we should look at to insure a better seal? - Thx

Slide seals are a good first step. You might also want to spend a couple hundred dollars and have a seal test done to identify other leaks.

Absolutely get the pressurized seal/leak test done!
(The shop closes off every thing and adds air pressure to the inside of the coach, then goes outside the coach and finds the leaks....WELL WORTH the cost to have a leak test done correctly, not just chasing ghosts.
If there are leaks you can see... there will be many more that you cannot.

I pull my slide in if it is raining extremely hard. The only thing keeping the water out is some rubber seals that basically just sit against the wall. Double especially if it is a wind driven hard rain. Jmho

If your seal are in good shape you should not have any leaks. I have been in some huge monsoons and had no leaks. It has never been necessary for me to bring in my slides because of rain.

Probably a small difference between a Newmar and a 2000 Alfa. He is probably going to need the slide seals replaced.

Basically they close off all the openings that they can ie: windows, vents & so on then put a high volume/low presssure air management fan thru a window opening and seal it. then close the door and turn the fan on, this will put somewhat low pressure inside the coach. where the air is escaping around seams/slide seals and so on are readily detected with a spray bottle of soapy water.
Not exactly rocket science.

For people running older equipment that may not be 100 percent anymore, I suggest caution in heavy wind driven rains. I have been looking for a new coach for about two years, and many I have looked at have evidence of leaks around the slides. Slightly tipping the coach toward the slides might also prevent a leak in heavy rains.

There are two types of slides. Those that leak when new and those that leak later.
If you don't have awnings on your slides add them. Some complain of wind noise but that's better than water damage.
If you close your slide with debris on the roof that will wear out the seals faster. It's all about keeping the top clean and the water off.

We've camped in my dad's previous 5ver, a 2000 Springdale, and even in severe t'storms it never sprung a leak even with the single slide out.
