Smelly drains
We are full timers and I have a problem with the drains in the sinks getting smelly a lot. I have been doing the boiling water and bleach thing that works for a few days but I was wondering if there is something better to do that is not as comber some as poring boiling water in the drains? Thanks for your help.

Have you tried simply using bleach without the boiling water? I really do not see what the added benefit of boiling hot water would be. Some hot tap water and a splash of bleach should do the trick. But if this is a constant problem it might be worthwhile to check your grey-water roof vent to make sure they haven't gotten plugged. They also have roof-vent caps that might aid in venting the tank better and making it less likely that odors will sneak past the sink traps.

Another thought and you might be doing it already...pour some tank sanitizer...smells like a lemon...in your grey tank (s) ...every time you dump them..that worked for us...

Have not experienced this so noted on the Pine Sol etc. Still - I'm wondering how this occurs since the purpose of the pea trap is to block odors from coming up from the tank through the drain. Is it possible the pea trap has something in it that needs to be removed (as stated by Pds47) and needs a good cleaning. Or possibly just more fresh water needs to be run after emptying a sink full of dish water etc. to be sure the trap is full of fresh water? Confused.

Some 5ers do not vent the sink drains through the roof, depending on where the galley is located. They use an under sink vent. See if that is contributing to your problem.

Clean the trap, you will be surprised at the gunk that collects there. That should do it. No substiture for removing it and cleaning everything down to the plastic. If you still have an odor, then something else is going on.

Maybe the air admittance valve is failing to close properly. Have you checked that? If it isn't closing properly you will get gray water odor.
It is on a stub off the side of the trap that goes to the sewer. It can be unscrewed - usually by hand - and checked or replaced.

Is it a new problem, or something that has developed over time?
