Suggested speed towing 5th wheel

Drive the speed limit as long as it does not exceed the max speed on the trailer tire sidewall. What did you have in mind??????

Larry said it best! Drive the speed YOU are comfortable driving. Just because my setup feels good and pulls good at 75 does not mean yours will. I too have tended to slow down at times from my younger days!

Thanks for the advice. My wife and I are newly retired and will be taking our time. 300 to 350 miles a day max. Just drove over Wolf Creek Pass yesterday as we dry camped at Big Meadows Campground for three days. (Got a Honda 2000 generator today!). The 2014 Ram 3500 DRW worked great on the pass. The engine brake is great.

I usually set the cruise at 62 or 63 mph, sit back and watch the countryside go by..

In California 62 is acceptable for a combination rig. 63 will get you a ticket.

.....been doing this 5er stuff since 1976. Bunch of miles on those trailers - and most of the miles at less then 70 mph even with the LT tires of my choice. Gas/fuel miles per gallon really start to suffer anywhere over 62-67mph and usually where I travel. One more thing to consider - how to stop that 8 to 15 thousand pound behemoth in a hurry from warp speed. Many times I've been passed on an interstate by someone hauling at beyond safe speed only to see him at a rest stop, toll booth or stuck in traffic.

On the flats 62, hills it depends on grades. Always got where I'm going.

We run 60mph give or take a couple. We get the best mileage and it allows me to enjoy the journey.
We were on a road today with a speed limit of 120kmh (75mph). I didn't enjoy it, had to constantly watch my mirrors for the morons who think that is the minimum speed permissible.

I thought you were not supposed to use the cruise while towing. Is that a misconception? Another thing I question is using overdrive. We can turn ours off and do if needed, but on flat highway is keeping the truck in overdrive acceptable?

I see no problem with using cruise control, unless you're one of those who then prop feet up on the dashboard! As to overdrive, if it doesn't labor the engine with too low RPMs for power needed, why not?

I do use OD and cruise plus Tow/Haul in the hills on my Ford. There are traffic situations and hills that will limit OD and cruise, but good sense should prevail. Tow/Haul - always when I had the '06 V10, now with the 6.7 diesel, 800 lb ft of torque makes me forget that doodad

Gas engines need more RPM than a diesel. My 6.4 has max torque at 2000 RPM, running at 60 to 62 is 1750 - 2000 rpm is 70. I run with the cruise and overdrive NOT in tow/haul and pulls over passes and small hill with ease. My 5er loaded weighs about 10,000.

Tow/haul is good for big hills due to it uses the tranny downshifting to heap maintain the cruise control speed. My only issue is at the bottom of the hills it takes a while for it to decide to shift and get er going again.

I have 102,000 miles on her and still strong as hell.
