Thought I was new, but
I’m in Pocatello Idaho, thought I was new here but appears I registered back in 2015, and never really came back. Anyway we are retiring this fall, Oct 31 is my last day! We are looking to get a 35-40 ft 5th wheel, and have discovered that my 3/4 ton gmc 6.0 gas won’t really do the job, so I guess I’ll be getting a diesel truck also. Hope to be able to get the information I need on here?

Thought I was new, but
What fifth wheel are you considering?
My general recommendation for those looking to get something is to get at least a 1 ton truck, but depending upon the trailer weight you may consider a 1 ton dually.
It will be best to pick your trailer and then match it to a new truck.

We are in the process of picking the 5th wheel, then will get a truck rated to pull it, I didn’t realize how heavy the 5er could get.

Welcome back and congrats on the upcoming retirement. Being gainfully unemployed is a good thing.
Good luck in the search for the perfect rig and truck

Yep, they can get heavy quickly. You’re approach is a good one as it ensures you get the right tool for the job.

I have a 38' Chaparral and my 3/4 ton 6.0 gasser handles it just fine.

Pick the 5'er first, then you know the weights you're dealing with. When doing weight calculations it's best to use the trailer GVWR.
One of the members created a calculator for which there was a public link to. I'm using my phone right now so I can't see the computer screen links.

Just a little heads up,
If you're planing on buying from Pocatello's Bish's RV and unless things have changed in the last few years their service department sucks.
I pull my 33' Montana with a 2008 3/4 ton Chevy 6.0 and it pulls it fine but then again I only pull my fifth up eight mile or diamond creek...the only time our Montana has been on the interstate was when I pulled it home and when we had problems under warranty when I pulled it back to Bish's twice (which they didn't fix and I ended up doing it myself)
I agree with the others...match the weight of the trailer to what the truck can handle and if I had to do it over again, I would have went with a one ton truck.
Congrats on the retirement...did that eight years ago and love it.
I live in Soda btw....

First, congrats on retirement. I hope to join the ranks one day soon.
When I ordered my 1 ton the base price difference between a 2500 and a 3500 was about $800. So the decision to go big was easier for me.
Also, I would consider a diesel. Diesels love to tow.
As for SRW vs DRW, well...........................

Agree with buy the 5th wheel 1st and have the dealer hold it. They will hold it for months if sold. At least my dealer held my 5th wheel for 6 weeks for me to buy a truck.
I think Ford, Ram, and GM will have all new redesigned F-350 and 3500 trucks in 2020.
Typically each redesign is an improvement on the last generation. I am not sure how much better trucks can get but I will let that up to Ford, Ram and GM to show me. Maybe a 1,000 ft. lb torque diesel engine with a transmission and frame to handle all that power.
I had a 2012 F-450 that I thought was plenty powerful. But 2020 will be the 2nd improvement since 2012.
The new 5th wheels are also better imho.
Depending on pin weight will decide if a single rear wheel or dual rear wheel truck is needed.

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement.
Match the truck to the 5th wheel and you'll be fine.

Our fifth is a little shy of 13000 lbs. empty.
Tow it with a F350 one ton diesel superduty. Best truck I've ever owned. Had the truck first, matched the trailer to it.
Have fun shopping!
