Transfer switch swap question

Is there anything to look out for, or is it a straight forward process to remove the transfer switch from a 1993 NuWay 5th wheel. No generator is or has been installed in it.....Is installation basically the reverse of removal?

I am selling the NuWay----its replacement, a Newmar motorhome, is not equipped with a transfer switch [must manually move the plug from the pedestal to an onboard outlet for gen. power.]{OK I'm lazy.}

So...instead of buying a transfer switch, I figure it would make more sense to keep the one from the 5th wheel, and install it in the motorhome. I still need to check to see if it is 50 amp capable, assuming my Onan can provide 50 amp output. IIRC it is a 7500 watt unit, so it should be capable of 50+ amp output.

Greg, before going to the trouble of removing the switch it's easy to tell if it's 50amp or not by looking at the end of your shore cord. What type of plug is on it? 3 spades and 1 round ground or 2 angled spades and 1 ground? If the latter, it's only 30amp.

If it is 50amp and you pull it out, inspect the contact points well. I would suspect something from that vintage would have signs of worn contact points, arcing, and oxidized posts. I'd seriously consider purchasing a new one. Besides, even if it is 50amp you're going to re-install your new MH's genset plug into the old Nuwa unit? Seems like a lot of work ;-)

As far as installation goes, lookup the brand/model number for wiring instructions. Some units have a jumper between one side's neutral. Your genset may have 2 neutrals (depending upon exact model and Spec). Which may have 2 breakers. IF in doubt post pics and details and we can walk you through it.

Humm...I thought I replied to this several hours ago, guess something happened.

Anyway, the Nuwa has a 50 amp cord, but after reading your post about corrosion got me to thinking. Even though it has not been used, it still is several years old, and, in checking the price of new transfer switches, I was surprised about how cheap new switches are. I would be foolish to use the old one, and possibly be installing something that might fail in a short time.
Not only that, but a new one will probably come with installation instructions.
