Upgrade to a 5er.

Hello, we are thinking about upgrading to a 5th wheel toy hauler. We have finally out grown our TT . We are looking at a 2015 Heartland CY 4200 Cyclone that has the fold down front porch on it and the back makes a party deck. And A 2015 XLR Thunderbolt 415 AMP. If anyones owns these brands please leave me some input on the pros and cons. I will be pulling with my 2002 GMC 2500 Duramax. Both campers are around 40 ft. and weigh around 10,000 lbs. I think. Thanks for all input, Bill

I think you are light in your 10k. A CY 4200 dry is almost 16k and grosses 20k. The pin is listed at 3500 lbs.

I was thinking the same as BCooke. Way heavier than you posted. You are going to need to up grade your truck if you want one of those.
Are you wanting to take your toys with you? is that why you want a toy hauler? Also how many people are you taking? do you need bunk beds etc..?

Definitely trade up for a dually 3500. But it is a real nice looking toy hauler.

I know lots of folks that own the Cyclone that you're looking at. Come on over to the Heartland Owners forum and talk to some of them.

You need to check any toyhauler's specifications carefully. Most don't have three axles for nothing--often very, very heavy not including the toys.

I have a 3/4 ton single rear wheel diesel pickup, and I'm limiting myself to 11K lbs. dry weight and 2000 lbs. pin weight.

I never realized until recently that 3/4 ton trucks are actually bastard trucks in the RV world--not capable of towing the big fivers that I would want to own.

Thanks for catching the error I meant 16,000 LBS. Typing faster than my brain works and did not catch it when I proof read before posting

you have the power without a chip. You don't have the vehicle to carry and stop that much weight. That camper will need at a minimum 1 ton and maybe bigger. The weight police will chime in soon) Sorry new camper will also mean new truck!

By the numbers you will want a 3500 DRW diesel, some will tell you more.

And if you use that "chip" towing you will be putting the next Allisison in it. That extra power with all that weight will slip the clutches in high gear.

No doubt about it, your into the 1 ton dually Diesel range, anything smaller and you'll regret it.

A 40fter in a cross wind, is no fun with a dually, and a single wheel axial would be even worse.

3/4 ton means you can only do 3/4 of what you want to do
