Wanting brand advice.

We are looking to get a fifth wheel camper. Thinking of buying new as not alot of half ton towables are okn the market. We are wanting bunks. We are wondering about brands people really like and why and what kind of issues you ha e experienced. So far the one we like the best is the cougar xlite. Just curious as to people's opinions. Thanks

JMHO: Of course.
I'm an advocate of forcing the RV manufacturers to change the phrase " Half ton towable " to the more correct " Towable with a properly equipped half ton truck "
If you already have the truck , check out it's tow weight ratings carefully before you buy a trailer.

We have a 2016 Cougar Xlite,, so far we love it. BUT,,, as Skip said, watch the weights. Don't believe the hype about 1/2 ton towable !!! Some are, but ours is gross weight of 10,000 lbs... Run the numbers on your truck... As most new rv's, we had a few warranty things, one slide adjustment, propane line kinking when another slide came in, etc... No biggy really in the rv world. Like I said, one year and several thousand miles,,, we love it. We did (before first trip) replace the china bomb tires, but thats in other threads...

I think that if you are wanting a bunkhouse style fifth wheel, is that what you mean by bunks, then the weights can get away from you for a 1/2 ton truck pretty easily.

Have you looked at the K-Z?

First thing I'd do is take your truck to a scale with everything you'll take camping with you. Wife, kids, dog, tools, and a full tank of gas and add 200 for a hitch, or at least add up all that weight. When you have a number, subtract that from the truck's GVWR. That's the payload you have available for a fifth wheel's pin weight or a minimum of at least 20% of the 5ers GVWR. Don't trust the yellow 'ccc' sticker on the truck door.

On my 2011 f150 max tow eco-boost, my sticker said 'ccc 1799'. I weighed it with me and a full tank of gas and it was only 1450 and i hadn't added the hitch or anything else.

There's no fifth wheel out there I'd want with that light of a pin weight.

Unless your truck has at least close to 3000# of 'ccc' I'd say don't do it!
