This canister is starting to leak up through the threads, is this normal after a few years, and can I get another season using plumbers tape?

Does it have a rubber o-ring? Maybe replacing the o-ring would help.

No to plumbers tape. Try plumbers silicone &/or replace the O ring.

If it never needed thread sealant before, it shouldn't ever. Oring, like they said.

Did it start leaking after you replaced the cartridge? Take it back apart and see if the black "O" ring is missing. If not, like others said, replace the "O" ring.
