Wear and Tear

After the first of the year I will be looking to trade up from a truck camper to a fifth wheel. I will be looking used and will appreciate any info as to what to look for in the way of wear and which parts of the camper may likely need to be replaced, such as water heaters, mother boards for the fridge and most importantly the roof. My current camper is a 1999 Lance 1120 with a metal roof. I have owned it for five years and all I have had to repair was the refrigerator. I would like to stay within a ten year old unit but knowing what I may have to put into it will help me decided what I want to pay for a used model. I have a 2010 Ford F350 and based on recommendations on this forum have determined I can safely haul about 9,500 pounds. Any input will be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you are buying from a private owner, ask what kind of maintenance work they've done to the fifth wheel. Make sure they have kept up on re-sealing joints and windows (anywhere water could get in). Ask if they've kept it covered when not in use and if they've washed it on a regular basis. It's also a plus if they had any coating applied to it assuming they bought it new.

Other than that look for any water damage, peeling paint or delamination. Look for any signs of infestation (material chewed away by the floors or corners of cabinets, beds, seats, etc).

Hope that helps

Wear and Tear

Thanks again to all who replied. I purchased a 2007 Montana 3400RL in excellent condition yesterday. One owner. I purchased through Camping World. Interior is pristine. Only issue on the outside is peeling decals. I plan to use a heat gun to remove them and then a cleaner wax and buffing when the weather is warmer in the spring. Roof is in very good condition.
