What do you do if you are over GVWR

It appears that I'm several hundred lbs over my GVWR, but not over the axle rating. My tow vehicle is a 2018 GMC 3500 HD diesel 4x4 LB DRW. So how serious is this and what should I do?

a. Don't worry about it.
b. Change the weight. Ditch the 5.5 KW generator and Trailer Saver Hitch, run with full FW tank.
c. Upsize my truck to Ford or Dodge?
d. Downsize my RV. Not really an option simply because I like what I have and this would by far be the most costly.

Sorry I had to start a new thread to get to the bottom of this issue.

How muchnis "several hundred pounds" 1000 or 100 could both be called several hundred. 100 would be no big deal. 1000 could be a problem.

On two different weights, it's been 400 - 800 lbs. But I have plenty of capacity on the axles (not close to GAWR). So where do you draw the line between don't worry about it to, it's a problem?

Are you talking about the TV GVWR, the rv GVWR, or the combined GCVWR? According to GMC your tv with the 3.73 axle will 5th wheel tow up to 22,700 lbs which is 4700 lbs over your trailer GVWR

This will be a fun thread.

Well, you all know my answer...

I worry about axle weights/tire ratings and GCWR which accounts for cooling, power train, drive train loads and acceleration/braking.... GVWR is for regulatory purposes. Ask any F-450 owner and you'll get the same story

You already made this decision when you went with the GM truck which has a lower GVWR vs the competition. Drive it.

From my experience towing heavy I would say you will not be a happy camper towing at 800 pounds over. Will things break? No not likely. Will you be stressed? Likeky if your mountain driving. Towing on the Iowa flat lands, probably wont know much difference. From my experience towing over weight once I arrived it would take hours to calm down. Switching to a more capa le truck, in my case a dually I never felt that way again.

good news and bad news I am in the same boat except I have a single rear wheel 3500 GMC.

The good news , the 2020 GMC / Chevy 3500 DRW with be able to tow just under 35000 lbs ( not the 22,000 your rated at), it will have the highest one ton rating of all 3 big manufactures. 10 speed GM / Allison tested trans , 3.42 rear end gear (current 3.73) still the current L5P motor.

Bad news you need to wait about 3~4 months to get one. Pricing and order window is roughly end of end june-july.

400 aint a big deal IMO on gvwr. As long as your axle weight is fine id motor on. Rear axle on truck is the biggest one to keep an eye on. overweight there is a prob. because your differential fluid is feeling the strain and rear brakes. Good to go there no worries.

And being over MFGs GVWR is not the big concern folks like to portray it to be.
MFG GVWR is a warranty, CLASS Distinction/Registration Fee number
Many states allow registration for higher GVW then MFG GVWR so even States ignore it.

Axle/tire load ratings --- stay at or under and go camping?
Kudos for getting weighed!

So one needs to ask with the big three in the tow rating wars, why is it while Ford and Ram are at the max of the Class 3 GVWR of 14,000# while GM has chosen to remain at 13,025#. Why is it that they just have bumped up the GVWR on the DRW to 14,000# and gain 975# of GVWR just like that? Why is it that they feel they can't add that extra 975# of GVWR to the GM DRW twins? What is it about the GM that they feel only rates 13,025# GVWR and NOT 14,000# what is the weak link that PREVENTS 14,000# GVWR?

Staying under axle weights and tire limits are the primary concerns. Your truck rating IS important though. They, the engineers, come up with the GVWR based on the combination of parts. Overloading these parts or exceeding their limits can shorten the trucks life, or cause other failures at the least opportune times.

If you are over weight and know it, your best option is to slow down and plan ahead for stops. GVWR is set based on a bunch of parameters such as passenger comfort, highway speeds, along with each component peak performance like engine, suspension, axles, and brakes. If you run over GVWR, there may be some slight performance notice and the best solution is to slow down your speed. I used to run commercial loads on a gooseneck trailer with my 06 Chevy DRW at 35,000 lbs GVW and 60 MPH would be my personal max speed between Chicago and NYC and the truck ran great for 315k loaded miles until I sold it. As long as I stayed under the axle ratings, I was legal.
My new truck is a beast, how can you overload that thing? Your truck rear axle should be designed for 11k lbs.
