I just had someone inform me that their friends have a 5th wheel and they parked it on their lot and hooked it up and lived in it. They were later told by the city that they could not live in it but could park it.

Has anyone heard of this?

We just switched from a MH to a 5th wheel and live on someone's property but it is not an RV park.

Just crurious.

It would depend on the applicable city zoning codes, deed restrictions and covenants, etc. Using an RV for a permanent residence is a whole different bag of worms than being able to store an RV on one's property. It's quite possible for the first to be illegal and the second legal.

In fact, we own a parcel of retirement property where such is exactly the case.

Yep, that's the way it is here. I can park the rig alongside the house but not live in it. as was said above local laws etc have their say in it.

You are probably best relocating to an RV Park, unless you find a town that will allow you to park an RV and line in it. Even in an RV Park, you need to verify that the state, county or community does not have a law stating that you can only stay there for x amount of time, or that you cannot live in an RV Park year round.

I know of one county in NJ that has an ordinance stating the one cannot stay in an RV park for more than 2 weeks. Campers need to move every 2 weeks. Supposedly where I am now in PA, there is an ordinance (cannot verify if local or county) stating that you cannot reside in an RV, in an RV Park, year round.

If you search through the threads you will find "RV house". It's a structure that you use the stick building for a kitchen/living room but your RV for a bedroom and extra room. A great idea and one that is legal. We are going to sell our current house and find a 600 - 800 Sq. ft. house on a small lot outside of the city and turn it into a RV house. The taxes and insurance will be low and we will live in it only during the winter months here in FL. Most everywhere in FL. you need 5 acres to put a mobile home on or live in your RV.

As long as there is a livable structure on the property you can park and use your RV.

There are many people that do this and use the "don't ask don't tell". DW has a friend that lived on some acrage in a park model ( I realise that is not an RV) and there were several TTs and a stickbuilt there too. The county got involved when they had septic trouble. I moved her park model to anther county into a similar situation. Where she parked it was too far from the septic so had a septic co set up a mobile tank that they pumped periodcally. There was at least one TT there the last time I saw it. These places were remote, heavily timbered and away from the county road. As long as someone ( neighbors etc) don't complain the county does'nt come looking.
