That is correct, more oil and more for filters, BUT, Diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines and aren't saddled with the ethanol scam that lowers MPG, and diesel fuel has more energy per gallon. Trucking companies use diesel because of the much lower operating costs.

The oil changes on the diesel engines are less frequent, so the cost pretty much evens out over time.

No, it's not correct.
Oil change on a Ram Cummins is 7,500 miles. 11qts +/- and filter
Fuel filter every 15,000 miles.
That's it.
No ignition system on Diesel. They work off compression ignition so no plugs and wires or ignition coils.
Also, there are only 6 cylinders, and way fewer moving parts. The valves/cams are gear driven, so no timing belt or even chain.

Well not quite. Oil change intervals are about the same, depending on model and usage. 11 to 15 quarts is typical for a diesel as opposed to about 6 for a gas engine. Oil filters cost a bit more. May take 2 fuel filters and they cost more. Modern diesels require DEF and that is an added expense. Air filters pass way more air and may need to be changed more frequently, depending on conditions, and they usually cost more.
Now I'll say that I have a diesel and am very happy with it. The added expense for the above is minor when considering the improved performance and fuel mileage. I am running a modern V-8 diesel.

I suspect we've found the problem.
Just kidding, of course.

Alright guys, thanks for all the great feedback. I've basically decided I could pull the TT I want but I will be maxed out and not comfortable for longer trips.
I'm currently looking at this vehicle, would definitly pull what I want and in my budget.
2006 Ford Super Duty F-250 Lariat
Right truck? Decent deal?
Thanks,
Richard

Your towing experience will be much better in that tow vehicle than the Tahoe. As for anything particular about the Ford diesel pickups from ten years ago, I have no helpful info.
Have fun!

The 6.0 Ford diesel has an extremely bad reputation, search the internet and you will find more horror stories than you care to read.

Yeah, saw that after I posted. Apparently it CAN be a good motor but doesn't take abuse like the 7.3 and with the miles on the models I'm looking at I have no idea how well it was taken care of.
Guess I'll have to keep looking.
Thanks,
Richard

As you said, it can be a great truck, but it's a very expensive gamble... especially when you are hundreds of miles from home with your family and camper.

I found a 2012 F-250 Super Duty with the 6.2L V8 gas engine in my price range but it's about 2 hours away. I found it so early they still don't have pictures up online (it was still in inspection after a fresh trade) so waiting to see if it's too good to be true.
Thanks to the fact that it has the same 6 speed transmission as the diesel it gets about the same gas mileage as my Tahoe.
Not opposed to diesel but just haven't found any of the newer 6.4's in my budget.
Thanks,
Richard

The 6.2 gas engines have a good reputation, of course the mileage will be less than a diesel.
The 6.4 diesel is the same as the 6.0, just added some displacement. Every year the 6.0 and 6.4 made some improvements, but I would avoid all of them.
The 6.7 is designed and built by Ford and is working great. There were a few serious problems on a few trucks that built before April, 2011. I have a May, 2011 6.7 and am a happy camper.

Well, they told me they'd get me pictures by the end of the day two days in a row. If they want my business they need to get it together.
Also found a 2009 F250 with the 6.4L diesel but it's a little over my budget but only 25 minutes away.
