03's and early 04's will get slightly better mileage than the 04.5 and up, but they do not have the same hp/tq either.

Before 04.5 they also don't have a cat...

Anyway, glad to hear the reflash helped. Mine generally doesn't do much better (with stick and 3.73) unless I keep it under 60.
