2010 F350 2WD or 4WD

As hard as it might be to picture the thought.....we will be taking the Beast out for it's first trip of the year ! Between our jobs and the work the Beast has required this year, it's time to use it and let a few of the 'other things' wait a bit before they get done.

Since we have pretty much decided to keep the Beast for a while longer...we are looking at upgrading the TV. Knowing the Ford has a new Super Duty ride and engine...I'm able to get a new 2010 Lariat DRW F350 for about $45,000. As they are both loaded....the choice would be between one that is 4WD with a 3.7 rear end and a 2WD that is 4.10 and Tow Boss. The Beast packed for a week trip with weights 14,600 lbs and either truck should handle it.

We have discussed the new Ford and Chevy...and being new and no deals...the mid $55,000 is what you get for the same truck. Even in a lower package I get $52,---. Considering the MPG differences, 15 vs 19 mpg, it would take about 8-10 years to have a 2011 pay back the difference in initial cost considering our driving.

Know the 2010 has the 6.4 engine...what are your thoughts on the Ford 2010 SD and the 6.4 engine. Having been a Chevy guy, don't know anything execpt what I read.

Personally, for towing that much weight, I'd go with a dually with the 4.10 axle. You will love the 4.10 axle when in the hills.

IMO, there's no contest...the 2WD with the 4.10 and the Tow Boss.

Look at the specs...you'll see where this truck has more towing and payload capacity than the 4WD with the 3.7 and no Tow Boss!

Here is the 2010 Ford Towing Guide. According to this guide, the GVWR for the 3.73 is 23,500# while the 4.10 is 26,000#.

The Tow Rating for the 3.73 SuperCab 4x2 = 15,900# and the 3.73 SuperCab 4x4 = 15,500#. The Tow Rating for the 4.10 SuperCab 4x2 = 18,400# and the 4.10 SuperCab 4x4 = 18,000#.

The Tow Rating for the 3.73 CrewCab 4x2 = 15,700# and the 3.73 CrewCab 4x4 = 15,200#. The Tow Rating for the 4.10 CrewCab 4x2 = 18,200# and the 4.10 CrewCab 4x4 = 17,700#.

Thanks for the inputs. If we do the deal...will get a 4x2 with the 4.10 Tow Boss. As we don't full time and use the truck for day to day driving we were looking at the 3.73 for possibly somewhat better mileage while not towing...was more concerned with pin weight and willing to live with the allowance the GVWR allowed as the weight was for a loaded 7-9 day trip and for our 'now' use with no Full time use in the future.

Should have questioned it differently as I was more interested in the 6.4 engine and if others had any experience with it.

Have read the articles on the 2011 Ford and GM's. There isn't anything bad that can be said about either truck. Especially the 'said' MPG they are reported to get, if it's true, and the towing. Interesting that the Ford for 2010 with a 3.7 axle has a 5th wheel rating of about 15,800 and the 2011 with the same axle is 20,800# in the 4x2.

Talked with a GMC dealer yesterday and they can't give any pricing on their 2011 trucks. Was able to do a web pricing last week and this week GMC took that away. GMC said they could put the order in and provide a price later if I wanted to get in 'line' for a new truck. Like what Ford has done with their new truck and always nice to have the lastest truck as we normally hang on to our truck for 8-10 years. But getting a 2010 now would be $8-10,000 less than a 2011 with the same equipment. That's a lot of diesel.

As I said in the first post, with our driving...it would take at least 8 years in the cost of diesel, looking at the difference between 15mpg for a 2010 and 19 mpg in the 2011 for the 2011 to pay the cost savings back in just fuel savings. That assuming either mpg is accurate. The local Ford dealer sells the DEF for $7.95 a gallon and NAPA for +$6.00 which adds to the cost.

The 2010 F350 with the Tow Boss we were considering was sold before we could go further...everything is through a dealer search in the southeast to locate the trucks....will discuss what a 2011 XLT with the options we need vs a 2010 Lariat loaded when we get back from a planned trip this week. Maybe redo the numbers and decide the best truck for the cost.

Have had three trucks with diesel and I have to buy the diesel for the towing....as the cost of gas vs diesel option and the cost of fuel, has never paid for it self with my driving.

With a big heavy diesel up front, I would consider the 4WD, particularly with a dually.

Maybe the extra weight of a fifth wheel helps, but pulling my open car trailer in very wet grass/mud, I need to use 4WD with my 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Mega Cab.

Lots of weight up front and little weight in back makes it easy to get stuck. Just my 1 cent. It's not worth 2 cents.

I keep hearing of all of the problems on grass with a dually and you must use a 4x4. I have NEVER had an issue with the 2-wheel drive, even in NE Oklahoma and the winter weather. Unless you will be going into areas where you need a 4 wheel drive, I don't feel that the extra expense (initial cost, lower fuel economy, higher maintenance cost) are worth the 4 wheel drive cost.

I've been towing 5th wheels with 2WD duallies since 1996 and have yet to be stuck. That includes a stint when we lived in central Ohio as well.

If you need 4WD where you live or where you plan to travel, by all means get it. In my experience, however, it's NOT a necessity for towing a 5th wheel.

We boondock in the Colorado Rockies. In addition to having 4X4, we carry 4 mud-service tire chains. I'll probably never need them, but unmaintained forest roads can get really slick when it rains.

At least in Colorado you can recover nearly all the cost of the 4-wheel drive option when you sell your truck, so it really doesn't cost you much in the long run.

Ford has dropped NAVISTAR, the 2011 is an in house built engine. So is the tranny, all new that is. The numbers look good and what they did to the engine sound good , now all you have to do is wait and see if it holds up.

I was lucky enough to have lunch with the head of Ford's diesel design team at the Denver auto show. He is really pumped about the new 6.7L. It makes more power and gets much better fuel economy than my 6.4, but like you say, we might want to wait and see how it holds up. Don't want to get disappointed like with the 6.0.
