2012 Ram 3500

Hey yall... I am considering upgrading from my beloved 05 Ram 2500 Cummins to a 2012 Ram 3500 DRW. I would be interested in hearing from anyone with a similar truck on what your experience has been. I am mostly concerned with the emissions system, the 68rfe trans, or anything else. This would be my first diesel with emissions so it's alittle scary...

This truck would most likely be paired with a Coachmen CHAPARRAL 360ibl the Mrs. Has been eyeing.

We had a 2012 and never had any issues other than the 02 sensors ,never replaced them , we had no transmission problems and we towed an 18,000 lb fifth wheel ,ours was equipped with 4.10 geared rearend and had the trans cooler package; theonly thing I would worry about is if the factory recalls were done, we had 2 , 1 was the preheater harness and 2 was a steering component, it was a good truck and I miss it, but we traded it and the 5ver in for a class A diesel pusher in January

thanks Defiant!... The truck I am looking at is 3.73 gears... I would rather have 4.10's I think, but with a 14-15k 5er and the flat midwest I suspect 800ft/lbs would be sufficient.

Sounds like I'm the current owner of the truck you're looking for. Except mine is the long bed, DRW, 4.10, crew cab, Lariat version. We bought it last May with 34k miles on it. We average 10.2 MPG towing our 5er (Sacramento to Quartzsite and back) and about 15 empty on the highway. Only 11-12 for my daily commute.

I've had no mechanical issues with it.
I have had the Cat stolen (it's stupid easy and only costs $2700) so I would recommend you have some rebar welded over both the inlet and outlet connectors.
If you change your own oil, I recommend you install the Fumoto drain valve. The 3 gallons of oil it holds drains very quickly. This valve allows you to slow that down some.
The oil filter is a bit inconvenient to get to but doable.
We installed the B&W turnover ball and Companion hitch. Love it (but it's the first 5er hitch we've ever used).
Last, we've added Firestone air bags on the rear to level out the ride. We pull a 2012 Montana 3100RL. When hitched, it squats more than I'd like.
Towing our 15,500 trailer is no problem. Love the power going up the mountains and the exhaust brake on the down grades.

You should not have any issues towing with the 3:73 gears set in that truck. I tow a 2106, 34RL Cedar Creek with the same differential gearing with the 68RFE and the 6.7L Cummins. We went out west this year and traveled on I70 and through the Eisenhower Tunnel with no issues. I pulled in 5th gear doing 55 MPH and slightly below 1900 RPM's going up hill; do to the volume of traffic and construct in some of the areas on I70. My EGT's where never above 900 F, Boost pressure was under 30PSI and the transmission oil temps at the sump were around 180F. Which I felt very comfortable with.

The only thing you need to know is to work the truck hard and enjoy it.

I would suggest that you also visit Turbo diesel Register.Com; this is a dedicated site for us Cummins owners in the Ram pick-up truck. There are several Buyer guide books on the LH side of the home page depending on model year that offers what to look for.

65K on my 11 HO Dually at times trade on current 15. ZERO problems towing a combined 29K with 3.42's.

You now have to be logged in as this is a member only perk. If you are logged in, than I would contact Robbin at TDR and see why you can't access the site.

I went to test drive this truck last Friday when i was off work (vacation day to head to the RV show)... They sold it the night before.

However, I have found what looks to be a very nice 2012 Chevy Silverado 3500 dually LTZ package... 106k miles... Anyone have thoughts / experience with the LML Duramax trucks?

I am not trying to flame anything but I really like the simplicity of the Cummins Engine. My reasons are as follows; Less moving parts; 6-Cylinders instead of 8 Cylinders, No glow plugs instead the Cummins uses grid heaters. Less fuel injectors that will need to be replaced sometime down the road. Just to name a few items.

Also I like the low end torque of the Cummins and low engine RPM's when towing. I am never above 1800 RPM's when I am towing I am usually around 1500 to 1600 RPM most of the time.

I am not sure where the Duramax engine operates at when you are on the highway or towing a heavy load.

I'm not sure where the D-Max is either but my Powerstroke is turning 1800 running 65 mph pulling 14k. The rear diff gear ratio will have a lot to do with cruise rpm, I have 3.73 gears.

OP, what rear gear does the 12 Chevy 3500 have?

My Ram is operating at 1550RPM's at 65MPH in 6th gear with 3:73 gears and LT285/70R/17 126R tires. Pulling my 34RL Cedar Creek.
